How is a Round Bar Manufactured?
The manufacturing of round bars involves two primary metallurgical processes: Hot Rolling and Cold Drawing. The choice of the production method will be dependent on the metal, the dimensional accuracy of the required needs and the final use of the bar. Hot rolling is typically utilized in mass production and structural engineering, whereas cold drawing is utilized in high precision engineering.
The Hot Rolling Process
The most popular way of producing steel and alloy round bars is hot rolling. It starts with the heating of raw metal billets or ingots in a furnace whereby they attain a soft temperature. When hot, the metal is subjected to a number of high-speed rolling mills. These rotating rollers create very high pressure and squeeze the metal, continuing to squeeze it and achieve a more uniform cylindrical shape. Once the last pass is completed, the bars are cooled, straightened and cut into desired lengths. The process is very economical and would be suitable in the manufacture of large quantities of structural-grade bars.
The Cold Drawing Process
Cold drawing is used in applications where the superior surface finish and then the precision of the application. This is usually initiated by a hot-rolled bar, which has been pickled, or cleaned, to remove scales on the surface. The bar is then subjected to a room temperature die of precision machining. Since a smaller hole causes the metal to be pressed through, the process enhances tensile strength and hardness of the material used and gives the material a greatly smooth finish. The bars are in other cases annealed, that is, heated and cooled to alleviate the internal stresses and enhance ductility.
