What Are Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars?

Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars are manufactured from commercially pure (CP) titanium containing a minimum of 99% titanium. The alloy designation ‘CP2’ (also written Titanium Gr 2, UNS R50400, or Werkstoff Nr. 3.7035) represents the most widely used CP titanium grade owing to an excellent balance of moderate strength, outstanding cold-workability, and superior corrosion resistance in a broad range of aggressive media.

Within the CP titanium family, Grade 2 occupies the mid-range stronger than Grade 1 (R50250) yet easier to form than Grades 3 and 4. The key interstitial elements that govern its properties are oxygen (max 0.25 wt.%) and nitrogen (max 0.03 wt.%). A higher oxygen content increases strength but reduces ductility; Grade 2 is deliberately specified at a controlled oxygen ceiling to deliver both adequate yield strength and the ductility required for complex machining, cold-forming, and orbital welding.

Bars are produced to ASTM B348 / ASME SB348 and may additionally conform to AMS 4902, AMS 4921, AMS-T-9046, MIL-T-81556, and ASTM F67 as applicable to end-use industry.

Titanium Grade 2 vs Titanium Grade 5 – Key Differences

Procurement teams in the aerospace and chemical industries frequently face the choice between Titanium Grade 2 (CP) and Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). The table below summarises the critical technical distinctions:

Alloy type Commercially pure (α) α-β alloy
UNS R50400 R56400
Min. tensile strength 345 MPa (50 ksi) 895 MPa (130 ksi)
Min. yield strength 275 MPa (40 ksi) 828 MPa (120 ksi)
Density 4.51 g/cm³ 4.43 g/cm³
Corrosion resistance Excellent (esp. oxidising/chloride) Good – lower than Gr 2 in HNO₃
Cold formability Excellent Limited – hot forming preferred
Weldability Excellent – all fusion methods Good – requires post-weld heat treat
Biocompatibility ASTM F67 – implant grade ASTM F136 – implant grade
Typical applications Chemical, marine, desalination Aerospace structural, high-stress parts
Relative cost Lower Higher (~2.5× Gr 2)

Use Titanium Grade 2 where maximum corrosion resistance, ease of fabrication and cost efficiency are priorities. Specify Titanium Grade 5 Round Bars where structural strength and fatigue resistance are the overriding requirements.

Corrosion Resistance of Titanium Grade 2 Bars

Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars derive their corrosion resistance from a stable, self-regenerating TiO₂ (titanium dioxide) passive film that forms instantly on any fresh metallic surface exposed to air or moisture. This mechanism provides protection across a very wide pH range and in many aggressive media where stainless steels and nickel alloys fail.

Performance in Specific Media

Environment / Media Resistance Notes
Seawater & brackish water Excellent No pitting; preferred for offshore hardware
Oxidising acids (HNO₃, aqua regia) Excellent Resists attack up to concentrated HNO₃
Chloride solutions Excellent Passive film stable up to ~260 °C in chlorides
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) Poor at high conc. & temp. Add inhibitor; consider Gr 7 (Pd-doped) for HCl service
Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) Fair at low conc. Grade 7 or 12 preferred above 5% H₂SO₄
Crevice corrosion Good Susceptible in concentrated hot brines above 70 °C; design for flow
Hydrogen embrittlement Low risk – good Avoid cathodic protection coupling below −0.7 V SCE
Organic acids (acetic, citric) Excellent Widely used in food-grade chemical plant

Welding Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars

Titanium Grade 2 is one of the most weldable forms of titanium. Its low interstitial content and single-phase (α) microstructure mean it does not experience the post-weld embrittlement that affects some other titanium alloys. The following guidelines are critical for sound welds:

  • Shielding gas: High-purity argon (99.998% min.) or helium. Dual shield both the weld puddle and the trailing root side. Inadequate inert gas coverage results in oxide discolouration — the internationally recognised colour criterion is: silver/bright = clean; gold/yellow = marginal; blue/grey/white = reject and rework.
  • Filler wire: AWS A5.16 ERTi-2 (matching grade). ERTi-1 (Gr 1) may be used for joints where dilution will raise the deposit strength sufficiently.
  • Pre-weld cleaning: Degrease with acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Mechanically clean (stainless steel brush dedicated to titanium only) and wipe immediately before welding. Contamination from steel tools transfers iron, which initiates galvanic corrosion.
  • Welding processes: GTAW/TIG (preferred), Plasma arc welding (PAW), Electron beam welding (EBW), Laser beam welding (LBW). MIG/GMAW is acceptable for non-critical weld repairs on thick sections using pure argon shielding.
  • Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT): Generally not required for CP Grade 2. Stress-relief anneal at 480–595 °C for 1–4 hours in an inert atmosphere improves dimensional stability of complex fabrications.
  • Note on dissimilar metal welding: Titanium may be electron-beam or explosion-bonded to stainless steel or copper alloys. Direct fusion welding to steel produces brittle intermetallics; always use a transition piece or clad product.

Heat Treatment of Titanium Grade 2 Bars

Because Titanium Grade 2 is an alpha-phase alloy, it cannot be strengthened by precipitation hardening or martensitic transformation. The following thermal cycles are used in manufacturing and fabrication:

Treatment Temperature Range Hold Time Purpose
Mill anneal 700–785 °C As required Recrystallise after cold working; restore ductility
Stress relief anneal 480–595 °C 1–4 hrs Reduce residual stresses post-forming/welding
Recrystallisation anneal 925–955 °C (1 hr) 1 hr Full softening; maximum corrosion resistance
Vacuum anneal 700–800 °C in vacuum 1–3 hrs Avoids surface oxidation on precision bars

All heat treatment must be carried out in a vacuum or inert-gas atmosphere furnace. Titanium absorbs oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen above 500 °C, causing case hardening (α-case) that degrades fatigue life and toughness. Our bars undergo SCADA-controlled annealing with documented time-temperature records supplied with each MTC.

Applications of Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars

The combination of corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and structural integrity makes Titanium Alloy Grade 2 Round Bars the material of choice across the following industries:

  • Chemical Processing: Reactors, heat exchangers, distillation columns, pumps, and piping handling nitric acid, chromic acid, organic acids, and halide-containing process streams. Titanium Gr 2 Rods machined into valve stems and pump shafts outperform stainless steel 316L in oxidising acidic service by a factor of 10× or greater in corrosion rate.
  • Marine & Offshore: Propeller shafts, seawater cooling system components, torpedo tubes, hull fittings, submarine hardware, and desalination plant components. The passive TiO₂ film remains intact in full seawater immersion indefinitely unlike copper alloys or stainless steel, titanium does not biofoul or suffer accelerated crevice attack in aerated seawater at ambient temperatures.
  • Aerospace & Defence: Hydraulic tube fittings, fasteners, airframe bulkheads where light weight and moderate strength are required. ASTM B348 Gr 2 Rods are approved to AMS 4902 and AMS 4921 for use in commercial aviation and defence applications where traceability to raw material origin is mandatory.
  • Medical & Dental: Bone screws, orthopaedic implants, spinal fusion rods, dental abutments, and surgical instrumentation. Grade 2 titanium is approved to ASTM F67 for surgical implant use. Its osseointegration properties are superior to stainless steel, and it is MRI-compatible — generating no artefacts in magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Power Generation & Desalination: Condenser tubing support structures, cooling water intake screens, flash evaporator baffles, and multi-stage flash (MSF) plant hardware. Titanium’s imperviousness to biologically influenced corrosion (BIC) from sulphate-reducing bacteria makes it the engineered choice for once-through seawater cooling systems.
  • Pulp & Paper Industry: Bleaching plant equipment, chlorine dioxide handling systems, and washers operating in hot bleach filtrate. Titanium Grade 2 Bars offer 20+ year service life in environments that destroy super-austenitic stainless steels within months.

Frequently Asked Questions - Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars

What is the difference between Titanium Grade 1 and Grade 2?

Grade 1 (UNS R50250) has a lower oxygen ceiling (0.18 wt.% max) than Grade 2 (0.25 wt.% max), giving it higher ductility and slightly lower strength. Grade 2 offers a better strength-corrosion balance for most industrial applications and is therefore the most commercially traded CP titanium grade. Grade 1 is preferred for severe cold-forming and deep-drawing operations such as heat exchanger tubing and bellows.

What standards does ASTM B348 Grade 2 round bar comply with?

ASTM B348 / ASME SB348 is the primary bar standard. Additional compliance includes: AMS 4902 (bar and billet), AMS 4921 (bar), AMS-T-9046, ASTM F67 (surgical implant), MIL-T-81556, and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 (sour service). We provide documentation confirming each applicable standard with every MTC.

Can Titanium Grade 2 bars be machined?

Yes. Titanium Grade 2 machines at approximately 30–40% of the speed of 304 stainless steel. Key machining guidelines: use sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools, apply generous flood coolant (water-soluble oil), maintain low cutting speeds with high feed rates to avoid built-up edge and work hardening. Peck drilling with frequent chip breaking is essential for holes deeper than 2× diameter.

What is the colour test for titanium weld quality?

The internationally accepted weld colour acceptance criterion for Titanium Grade 2 is: Silver/bright = acceptable (full shielding); Straw yellow = review (marginal shielding); Blue = reject (oxidation present); Grey/white/powdery = reject (severe contamination, rework mandatory). This standard is referenced in AWS D1.9 and AMS 4951.

How does the price of Titanium Grade 2 compare to stainless steel 316L?

On a per-kg basis, Titanium Grade 2 Round Bar is typically 4–6× the cost of stainless steel 316L. However, on a per-unit-volume basis the differential narrows because titanium's density (4.51 g/cm³) is approximately 57% of 316L (8.0 g/cm³). For corrosion-critical applications, the total cost of ownership over a 20-year service life frequently favours titanium due to near-zero maintenance and replacement costs.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

We supply from single bars for prototype and MRO requirements up to multi-tonne project quantities. There is no formal MOQ — pricing is structured to reflect quantity, so volume orders receive proportionally competitive rates. Contact our sales team for a tailored quotation.

Do you supply dual-certified ASTM B348 + ASTM F67 bars for medical use?

Yes. We supply Titanium Grade 2 Round Bars dual-certified to both ASTM B348 (general engineering) and ASTM F67 Grade 2 (surgical implant applications). These bars require tighter chemical and cleanliness controls and are supplied with a dedicated MTC confirming compliance to both standards. Lead time is 2–3 weeks from order confirmation.
