What Is Duplex Steel UNS S32205 F60 Round Bar?

Duplex stainless steel gets its name from a dual-phase microstructure of approximately half ferrite and half austenite. This balance delivers a combination that single-phase steels cannot: the high strength of ferritic steel together with the corrosion resistance and toughness of austenitic steel.

UNS S32205 is the current, tightly controlled specification for 22% chromium duplex, marketed as Duplex 2205 and designated F60 under ASTM A182. A UNS S32205 round bar is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy bar, produced by hot rolling, forging, or cold finishing, used as machining stock for shafts, valve and pump components, fasteners, shaft seals, rudders, propellers, and fabrications operating in aggressive chloride environments.

The grade’s chemistry drives its performance: about 22% chromium and 3% molybdenum for pitting resistance, 5% nickel for toughness, and a controlled higher nitrogen level of 0.14 to 0.20% that stabilises the austenite phase, raises strength, and improves weldability. The result is an F60 round bar with a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa, roughly double that of grade 316.

The “2205” family has two UNS numbers, S31803 (the original, F51) and S32205 (the modern refinement, F60). They share the same trade name and Werkstoff number (1.4462), but S32205 was introduced to tighten the chemistry.

The higher guaranteed nitrogen in S32205 improves phase balance after welding and raises the pitting-resistance floor, which is why newer specifications and offshore standards call it out specifically. Because the S32205 range sits within the S31803 range, most modern mill bar is dual-certified to both, so one heat covers either call-out.
