Stainless Steel 304/304L Round Bar

Stainless steel 304 round bar is solid round bar made from 304 (UNS S30400, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4301, 18Cr-8Ni) austenitic stainless steel, the most widely used stainless bar grade. Its low-carbon version, 304L (UNS S30403, 1.4307), holds carbon to 0.030% max so it can be welded without sensitisation. Annealed ASTM A276 / A479 bar has a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa and minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (304L: 485 / 170 MPa), is non-magnetic, and resists atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, food and dairy media and many organic acids. It is not the grade for seawater or warm chloride service: use 316 / 316L there.

Jade Alloys in Mumbai stocks and exports SS 304 and 304L round bars to ASTM A276, ASTM A479 / ASME SA276, SA479, AMS 5639 and EN 10088-3 (1.4301 / 1.4307), from 3 mm to 800 mm diameter, in bright drawn, cold drawn, centreless ground, peeled, rough turned, hot rolled (black) and forged finishes, in lengths of 3-6 m or cut to size. Every lot is traceable to its heat and ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate, with 3.2 third-party inspection on request. Also supplied as hex, square, flat, rectangular, hollow and threaded bar. Check ex-stock sizes or read about us.

What Is Stainless Steel 304 / 304L Round Bar?

304 contains about 18-20% chromium and 8-11% nickel (ASTM bar limits). The chromium builds a self-healing passive film that gives corrosion resistance; the nickel keeps the structure austenitic, which gives toughness, formability and weldability and makes the bar non-magnetic when annealed. 304 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold work.

Choose 304 for general fabrication, food and dairy equipment, tanks, shafts, fasteners and architectural parts. Choose 304L where the part is welded and cannot be annealed afterwards. Choose 316 / 316L when chlorides, seawater or de-icing salts are present.

Stainless Steel 304 vs 304L Round Bar

The main difference is carbon. 304 allows up to 0.08% carbon in ASTM A276 / A479 (0.07% in EN 10088-3). 304L is limited to 0.030%. Lower carbon keeps chromium carbides from forming at grain boundaries in the weld heat-affected zone (sensitisation), which would otherwise reduce corrosion resistance there.

Property SS 304 SS 304L
UNS S30400 S30403
Werkstoff Nr. 1.4301 1.4307 (also 1.4306)

Min tensile / yield (ASTM, annealed) 515 / 205 MPa 485 / 170 MPa
Sensitisation (425-860 C exposure) Possible after welding or long exposure Strongly reduced; no post-weld anneal needed for most services
Best for Machined parts, shafts, general fabrication, non-welded service Welded vessels, pipework, tanks, heavy welded sections
Price Base Small premium on some sizes

Dual certification (304 / 304L). One heat can be certified to both grades when it meets the stricter limit of each: carbon 0.030% max and tensile and yield strength at or above the 304 minimums (515 / 205 MPa). Most 304L bar sold today is dual-certified. State “304/304L dual cert required” or “304L only” on your purchase order.

Corrosion Resistance of 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar

304 resists corrosion through its passive chromium oxide film, which repairs itself where oxygen is present. Its pitting resistance (PREN about 18-19) is lower than 316L (about 24) because it has no molybdenum.

Environment Performance Engineering note
Atmosphere: rural, urban, mild industrial Excellent Normal choice for indoor and outdoor architectural and equipment use
Coastal air, de-icing salts Limited Tea staining and pitting can appear; use 316 / 316L
Fresh and treated water, steam Good Suitable at moderate temperature and low chloride
Seawater Not recommended Use 316L, duplex or super duplex
Food, dairy, brewing Excellent Smooth finish and cleanability; specify surface finish and passivation for hygienic use
Organic acids (acetic, citric, lactic) Good At ambient to moderate temperature
Nitric acid Good Dilute to moderate concentration; test for hot concentrated service
Hydrochloric acid Not suitable Causes pitting at any concentration
Sulphuric acid Limited Only very dilute and cold; test for your concentration
Mild alkalis Good Check temperature and concentration
Chloride stress corrosion cracking Susceptible Risk above about 60 C under tensile stress with chlorides; consider duplex
Intergranular corrosion after welding 304: possible; 304L: low risk Use 304L or solution anneal after welding

Stainless Steel 304 vs 316 vs 303 vs 321 Round Bar

Grade Main difference Choose when
304 / 304L 18Cr-8Ni; base austenitic grade General corrosion resistance, food, architecture, welded work (304L)
316 / 316L 2-3% molybdenum Chlorides, coastal, marine, chemical, pharmaceutical service. See 316 / 316L round bars
303 Sulphur added for free machining Heavy high-speed machining of parts not exposed to chlorides; not for welding
321 / 347 Titanium / niobium stabilised Long service at 425-900 C, or welded without anneal in that range
904L, duplex 2205 Higher Cr, Mo (and N) Strong chloride and acid service where 316L is not enough. See 904L and duplex 2205

Annealed 304 and 316 have the same ASTM minimum yield (205 MPa); typical values differ slightly by supplier and size.

Welding, Machining & Heat Treatment of 304 Round Bar

  • Welding: all fusion and resistance methods. Use ER308L / E308L filler for both 304 and 304L. Limit heat input and interpass temperature to reduce distortion and sensitisation. For thick multi-pass welds in corrosive service use 304L or anneal after welding.
  • Machining: about half the cutting speed of free-machining steel; it work-hardens, so use rigid set-ups, sharp tools, positive feeds and flood coolant, with no light rubbing passes. For heavy machining of parts away from chlorides, 303 machines faster.
  • Heat treatment: not hardenable by heat treatment. Solution anneal at about 1010-1120 C then cool rapidly. Hot work at 1150-1260 C; avoid working below about 925 C.
  • Passivation: after machining or welding, pickle and passivate (ASTM A967 / A380) to restore the surface film, especially for food and pharmaceutical parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Solid round bar made from 304 (UNS S30400, 1.4301) austenitic stainless steel, about 18-20% chromium and 8-11% nickel. Annealed bar has 515 MPa minimum tensile and 205 MPa minimum yield strength and is non-magnetic. It resists atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, food media and many organic acids.

Carbon content. 304 allows up to 0.08% (ASTM) or 0.07% (EN); 304L is limited to 0.030%, which prevents sensitisation in welds. 304L has slightly lower specified strength (485 / 170 MPa).

Yes, when the heat has carbon 0.030% max and meets the 304 strength minimums (515 / 205 MPa). State "304/304L dual cert" on the order.

Carbon 0.08 max, manganese 2.00 max, silicon 1.00 max, phosphorus 0.045 max, sulphur 0.030 max, chromium 18.0-20.0, nickel 8.0-11.0, iron balance. EN 10088-3 1.4301 has its own limits, shown in the chemistry tables above.

ASTM A276 / A479 annealed: 515 MPa (75 ksi) minimum tensile, 205 MPa (30 ksi) minimum yield, 30% minimum elongation. 304L: 485 / 170 MPa.

Annealed 304 is non-magnetic. Cold working (drawing, bending) can make it slightly magnetic. Annealing restores the non-magnetic condition.

316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which gives much better resistance to chlorides and pitting. Use 316 / 316L for coastal, marine and chloride service; 304 for general duty at lower cost.

No for immersion or splash zones. It can pit and crevice-corrode in chlorides. Use 316L, duplex or super duplex. 304 suits mild coastal air only for non-critical parts.

Weight in kg per metre = 0.00623 × diameter in mm squared. A 50 mm bar weighs about 15.57 kg per metre, so about 46.7 kg for 3 m and 93.4 kg for 6 m.

A276 covers stainless bars and shapes in hot-finished or cold-finished condition for general use. A479 covers bars and shapes for boilers and pressure vessels. Many bars are dual-certified to both.

AMS 5639 is the aerospace material specification for 304 stainless steel bar and forgings in the solution-treated condition. Quote it on the order when your drawing calls for it.

Straight hot-rolled round bar falls under HSN 7222 11 and cold-finished (bright) bar under 7222 20 in India.
