Carbon Steel ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe

Jade Alloys is a direct manufacturer, stockist and exporter of Carbon Steel ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe the benchmark specification for seamless carbon steel pipe in high-temperature service. ASTM A106 / ASME SA106 covers three grades (A, B and C), of which A106 Gr B pipe is by far the most widely specified, offering a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi (415 MPa) and a minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi (240 MPa).

ASTM A106 Gr.B material is the default choice wherever pressurised fluids, steam or hot gases are conveyed at elevated temperature: refinery process lines, boiler and superheater circuits, power plant piping, petrochemical units and oil & gas transmission. Its chemistry is closely aligned with ASTM A53 Grade B and API 5L Grade B, but A106 is manufactured seamlessly and is qualified for high-temperature service which is why engineers specify A106 Grade B seamless pipe where A53 or API 5L would not be accepted.

We stock A106 Gr B pipe from 1/2″ NB to 48″ NB in SCH 20 through SCH 160, XS and XXS, in seamless, ERW, LSAW and EFSW construction. Each length ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill certification, full heat-number traceability and, where required, NACE MR0175, HIC and IBR documentation. Coated and lined options — FBE, 3LPE, 3LPP, galvanised and CRA clad are supplied to project specification.

The practical difference: A106 and A53 share near-identical chemistry and strength. A106 is produced seamless only and is written for high-temperature service; A53 permits welded construction and is generally specified for lower-temperature mechanical and general pressure duty. Where the line runs hot, A106 Gr B is the correct call. Below −29 °C, switch to ASTM A333 Grade 6.

Frequently Asked Questions — ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe

1. What is ASTM A106 Grade B pipe?

ASTM A106 Grade B is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. Grade B is the most commonly ordered of the three grades (A, B and C) and offers a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi (415 MPa) and a minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi (240 MPa). It is used extensively in refineries, boilers, power plants and petrochemical piping.

2. What is the difference between ASTM A106 Grade B and ASTM A53 Grade B?

The chemistry and strength values are very close, but A106 is produced seamless only and is qualified specifically for high-temperature service. ASTM A53 permits welded construction and is generally used for lower-temperature mechanical and general pressure applications. Where a line runs hot, A106 Gr B is the correct specification.

3. Is ASTM A106 Gr B equivalent to API 5L Grade B?

Chemically and mechanically they are broadly equivalent, and dual-certified A106 / A53 / API 5L Grade B material is commonly supplied. However, API 5L is written for pipeline transportation service while A106 is written for high-temperature service, so the two are not always interchangeable in a design code sense. The European equivalent is EN 10216-2 P265GH.

4. What is the temperature limit of ASTM A106 Grade B pipe?

A106 Grade B is suitable for service from −20 °F (−29 °C) up to 800 °F (427 °C). Below −29 °C, ASTM A333 Grade 6 low-temperature carbon steel pipe should be specified instead.

5. What sizes and schedules are available in A106 Gr B pipe?

Seamless from 1/2" to 26" NB, ERW from 1/2" to 24" NB and LSAW up to 100" NB. Schedules from SCH 10 and SCH 20 through SCH 40, STD, SCH 80, XS, SCH 160 and XXS, with wall thicknesses from 2.11 mm to 85 mm.

6. What is the price of ASTM A106 Grade B pipe?

Pricing depends on size, schedule, quantity, coating, mill origin and certification scope. Because carbon steel prices move with billet and freight markets, we quote live rather than publishing a fixed list. Send us your size, schedule, wall thickness, quantity and destination and we will return a firm price within 24 business hours.

7. Can A106 Grade B pipe be welded?

Yes. A106 Gr.B has excellent weldability and can be joined using standard qualified procedures including TIG, SAW, MAG and manual arc welding. It is also suitable for bending, flanging and similar forming operations.

8. What certification is supplied with your A106 Gr B pipe?

Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 on request) mill test certificate, full heat-number traceability, packing list and certificate of origin. NACE MR0175 / MR0103, HIC, SSC, IBR and PED certification are available where specified, and third-party inspection at the mill is welcomed.
