Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (comprising about 63% nickel and 28 to 34% copper) that is known to have superior corrosion resistance in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and caustic alkaline environments. Being a solid-solution alloy, it can only be reinforced by cold working and has a great mechanical performance at cryogenic temperature to 480 degrees C (900 degrees F). Alloy 400 Sheets have very low corrosion rates in flowing seawater, excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and are listed in NACE MR-01-75 under oil and gas sour service. What is Monel Alloy 400 Sheet & Plate ?

Monel 400 sheet and plate is a copper-nickel-based alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. It also contains controlled amounts of manganese, silicon, and carbon. Alloy 400 sheets and plates offer good ductility and perform well in a wide range of corrosive environments. These materials exhibit outstanding resistance to both alkaline and acidic conditions.

In addition, Monel 400 provides good thermal conductivity in the annealed condition. This grade offers high tensile strength and toughness, making it suitable for subzero temperatures as well as elevated temperatures up to 480 degrees C (900 degrees F). The hardness of Monel 400 sheets and plates can be enhanced through cold working processes.

Corrosion Resistance of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate

Monel 400 Sheet and Plate offer outstanding corrosion resistance across a wider range of environments than most common engineering alloys. Key resistance properties include:

  • Seawater and Marine: very low corrosion rate in flowing seawater; resistant to biofouling and marine organisms
  • Hydrofluoric Acid: one of the few alloys resistant to HF at all concentrations up to boiling point
  • Hydrochloric and Sulphuric Acids: effective resistance under reducing (de-aerated) conditions
  • Alkaline Environments: excellent resistance to caustic alkalis, neutral and alkaline salt solutions
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking: virtually immune to chloride-induced SCC in typical service environments
  • Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: low susceptibility in flowing media; note that stagnant seawater may cause localised pitting

Note: Monel 400 is not suitable for contact with nitric acid, moist chlorine, or oxidising acid environments.

Welding and Fabrication of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate

Monel 400 Sheet and Plate can be welded using conventional processes including GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (stick). Recommended filler metal is ERNiCu-7 (Monel 60) for GTAW/GMAW or ENiCu-7 (Monel 190) for SMAW. Key fabrication guidelines:

  • Preheat: generally not required
  • Post-weld heat treatment: not required for standard service; stress relief may be specified for high-restraint joints
  • Cleaning: thoroughly degrease and remove oxide scale from weld area before welding
  • Machining: Monel 400 work-hardens during cutting; use sharp, high-speed steel or carbide tooling with adequate feed rates

Alloy 400 can also be hot-formed (1100 to 1230 degrees C) or cold-formed using equipment suited for high-strength alloys.

Applications of ASTM B127 Monel 400 Sheet & Plate

  • Marine Industry: Monel 400 Sheet has one of the lowest corrosion rates in flowing seawater of any commercial alloy, making it standard for propeller shafts, pump casings, and sea chest components.
  • Chemical and Petrochemical: Alloy 400 Plates resist hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to boiling point, and are widely used in HF alkylation units, acid piping, and reactor vessel linings.
  • Oil and Gas: Listed under NACE MR-01-75 for sour service; Monel 400 Plates are used in downhole tools, valve bodies and wellhead components in H2S-containing environments.

Monel 400 Plate can be used continuously up to 480 degrees C (900 degrees F). Short-term service up to 538 degrees C (1000 degrees F) is acceptable. The alloy retains its mechanical properties well at subzero temperatures.
Q. What is the difference between Monel 400 and Monel K500?
Monel K500 is an age-hardenable version of Monel 400, containing aluminium and titanium additions. It offers approximately three times the yield strength of Monel 400 but is more expensive. K500 is preferred for springs, fasteners and shafts; 400 is preferred for sheet-fabricated chemical and marine equipment.
