Monel 400 sheet and plate is a copper-nickel-based alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. It also contains controlled amounts of manganese, silicon, and carbon. Corrosion Resistance of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate
Monel 400 Sheet and Plate offer outstanding corrosion resistance across a wider range of environments than most common engineering alloys. Key resistance properties include:
- Seawater and Marine: very low corrosion rate in flowing seawater; resistant to biofouling and marine organisms
- Hydrofluoric Acid: one of the few alloys resistant to HF at all concentrations up to boiling point
- Hydrochloric and Sulphuric Acids: effective resistance under reducing (de-aerated) conditions
- Alkaline Environments: excellent resistance to caustic alkalis, neutral and alkaline salt solutions
- Stress Corrosion Cracking: virtually immune to chloride-induced SCC in typical service environments
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: low susceptibility in flowing media; note that stagnant seawater may cause localised pitting
Note: Monel 400 is not suitable for contact with nitric acid, moist chlorine, or oxidising acid environments.
Welding and Fabrication of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate
Monel 400 Sheet and Plate can be welded using conventional processes including GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (stick). Recommended filler metal is ERNiCu-7 (Monel 60) for GTAW/GMAW or ENiCu-7 (Monel 190) for SMAW. Key fabrication guidelines:
- Preheat: generally not required
- Post-weld heat treatment: not required for standard service; stress relief may be specified for high-restraint joints
- Cleaning: thoroughly degrease and remove oxide scale from weld area before welding
- Machining: Monel 400 work-hardens during cutting; use sharp, high-speed steel or carbide tooling with adequate feed rates
Alloy 400 can also be hot-formed (1100 to 1230 degrees C) or cold-formed using equipment suited for high-strength alloys.
