What is SMO 254 / 6 Moly Stainless Steel?

SMO 254 (Standard designation: UNS S31254, DIN 1.4547) is a fully austenitic, super-austenitic stainless steel originally developed by Outokumpu (Sweden). Its unusually high molybdenum and nitrogen content gives it a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of approximately 42–43, compared to just 24 for SS 316L making SMO 254 the preferred material for applications where lower grades rapidly corrode.

Key properties that make SMO 254 Plates and Sheets the preferred engineering choice:

  • Superior pitting & crevice corrosion resistance in seawater and chloride-bearing process streams (PREN ~43 vs ~24 for 316L)
  • Excellent stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance — critical in hot saline environments and HCl-bearing process media
  • High tensile strength (490 MPa min.) with outstanding impact toughness down to sub-zero temperatures
  • Fully austenitic and non-magnetic — low magnetic permeability (<1.005 μr) for applications requiring magnetic neutrality
  • Cost-effective alternative to high-cost nickel alloys (e.g. Hastelloy C-276) and titanium in many corrosive services

PREN Value — Why It Matters for Engineers

The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is the standard engineering metric for comparing alloy corrosion resistance in chloride environments, calculated as: PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N. A PREN above 40 is the accepted industry benchmark for seawater service.

Alloy PREN Value Seawater Suitability
SMO 254 (S31254) ~42–43 ✓ Excellent Yes — standard choice for offshore
Super Duplex S32750 ~38 Yes — with limitations
Duplex S31803 ~34 Limited chloride service
SS 316L ~24 Not recommended for seawater

How Does SMO 254 Compare to SS 316L?

SMO 254 contains 6% molybdenum vs. 2–2.5% in 316L, and adds nitrogen (0.18–0.22%) which is absent in 316L. This raises tensile strength and, more importantly, pushes the PREN from ~24 to ~43 — delivering dramatically better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice attack, and SCC. SMO 254 is the standard upgrade when 316L has failed in service. For a full comparison, see our Stainless Steel 316/316L Sheets & Plates page.

Welding, Fabrication & Heat Treatment of SMO 254

Because SMO 254 / UNS S31254 is a fully austenitic grade, proper welding practice is critical to maintain its corrosion performance after fabrication:

  • Recommended filler metal: AWS A5.9 ER385 (20-25-5 Cu L) or matching composition over-alloyed filler. Never use 316L filler — it will result in underalloyed welds with poor corrosion resistance in the HAZ.
  • Heat input limit: Do not exceed 1.5 kJ/mm. Excessive heat promotes sensitization and chromium carbide precipitation, reducing corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
  • Interpass temperature: Maintain below 100°C (212°F) in multi-pass welding to prevent hot cracking and sigma-phase formation.
  • Post-weld cleaning: Pickling and passivation are mandatory after welding to restore full corrosion resistance. Mechanical grinding alone is insufficient — it creates embedded iron contamination.
  • Hot working range: 1150–900°C. Avoid prolonged exposure at 600–900°C — sigma phase precipitation risk reduces toughness and corrosion resistance.
  • Annealing / Solution Treatment: 1150–1200°C followed by rapid water quench — restores full corrosion resistance and mechanical properties after forming or welding.

Applications of SMO 254 Sheets & Plates Across Industries

The combination of exceptional corrosion resistance, high strength, and non-magnetic character makes SMO 254 the material of choice across multiple high-demand industries:

SMO 254 Plates in Oil & Gas / Offshore Platforms

Offshore platforms, subsea equipment, and FPSO vessels operate in highly aggressive seawater environments. SMO 254 plates are used for seawater handling systems, pump housings, desalination modules, and topside piping where 316L and duplex grades fail to achieve adequate service life. The PREN of ~43 exceeds the seawater threshold, and the SMO 254 Pipes & Tubes complement flat-plate applications in offshore skid fabrication.

SMO 254 Sheets in Chemical & Pulp/Paper Processing

The pulp and paper industry’s bleaching sequences use aggressive mixtures of chlorine compounds, chlorine dioxide, and hot acids that rapidly attack standard austenitic grades. SMO 254 sheets provide the corrosion resistance required for bleaching equipment, digesters, and washers. In chemical processing, SMO 254 is specified for sulfuric acid service, HCl-bearing streams, phosphoric acid production, and pharmaceutical CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems where product purity and vessel longevity are critical.

Other major application industries:

  • Marine & Desalination: Heat exchangers, reverse osmosis housings, brine concentration vessels, seawater intake screens
  • Petrochemical & Refining: Reactor vessels, separators, heat exchangers handling chloride-contaminated hydrocarbons
  • Power Industry: Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, cooling water circuits, condenser tubes
  • Mechanical & Plant Engineering: High-corrosion pressure vessels, flanges, expansion joints in chloride service
  • Food & Pharmaceutical: CIP systems, sterile processing, non-magnetic requirements near MRI equipment
  • Aerospace: Non-magnetic structural components, cryogenic applications

Frequently Asked Questions About SMO 254 Sheets & Plates

What is the PREN value of SMO 254, and why does it matter?
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of SMO 254 is approximately 42–43, calculated as Cr + 3.3×Mo + 16×N. This exceeds the industry-standard threshold of 40 required for seawater service and compares favourably to SS 316L (~24) and Super Duplex S32750 (~38). A higher PREN means greater resistance to pitting initiation in chloride environments. SMO 254 Plates are widely used for offshore platform piping, desalination membranes, and marine heat exchangers because of this elevated PREN.
What is SMO 254 material grade?
SMO 254 is a high-alloy super-austenitic stainless steel with UNS S31254 designation and DIN Werkstoff Nr. 1.4547. It contains 19.5–20.5% chromium, 17.5–18.5% nickel, 6.0–6.5% molybdenum, 0.5–1.0% copper, and 0.18–0.22% nitrogen. Originally developed by Outokumpu (Sweden), it provides excellent resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion in chloride-rich environments.
What is the difference between SMO 254 and SS 316L?
SMO 254 contains 6% molybdenum compared to 2–2.5% in SS 316L and includes nitrogen, which is absent in 316L. The PREN increases from approximately 24 (316L) to 43 (SMO 254), resulting in significantly better resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in hot chloride environments. SMO 254 is commonly selected when SS 316L has failed in seawater, bleach plant, or offshore service.
Is SMO 254 / 254 SMO magnetic?
No. SMO 254 is fully austenitic with very low magnetic permeability, typically less than 1.005 μr, making it effectively non-magnetic. This makes it suitable for applications near sensitive instruments, MRI facilities, subsea navigation equipment, and environments where ferromagnetic contamination must be avoided.
What is the HSN Code for SMO 254 Plate?
HSN Code: 72192111 — Cold-rolled flat-rolled products of stainless steel, of a width of 600 mm or more, thickness less than 3 mm.
Can Jade Alloys supply SMO 254 plates with EN 10204 3.2 certification?
Yes. Jade Alloys supports EN 10204 Type 3.1 and EN 10204 Type 3.2 certification. Third-party inspectors accepted include Lloyd's Register, DNV-GL, Bureau Veritas, TUV, SGS, and Intertek. Please specify your inspection requirement at the time of enquiry.
What is the SMO 254 plate price in India?
SMO 254 plate pricing depends on thickness, quantity, surface finish, and certification requirements. As a direct manufacturer and stockist, Jade Alloys offers competitive pricing compared to trading intermediaries. Contact us for a same-day indicative quotation for domestic and export supply.
What filler metal should I use for welding SMO 254?
Use AWS A5.9 ER385 (20-25-5 Cu L) or an equivalent over-alloyed filler metal matching the SMO 254 composition. Do not use 316L filler wire, as the lower alloy content reduces corrosion resistance in the weld zone. Keep heat input below 1.5 kJ/mm and interpass temperature below 100°C. Post-weld pickling and passivation are mandatory.
