What is ASTM A194 Grade 7?

ASTM A194 Grade 7 is a standard material specification for high-tensile nuts and other internally threaded fasteners manufactured from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel specifically AISI 4140, 4142, 4145, 4140H, 4142H and 4145H. The nuts are produced by hot forging, cold forging or machining from bar stock and are subsequently quenched and tempered to achieve a Brinell hardness of 248–327 BHN.

The industry standard for B7 bolting: ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are the premier alloy steel companion nut for ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolts. The Cr-Mo alloy composition delivers higher proof loads, better elevated-temperature retention, and NACE MR0175 sour-service compliance advantages that Grade 2H medium-carbon nuts cannot match.

Grade 7 nuts find widespread use in bolted flange joints for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pipelines, valves and other critical industrial equipment. The ASME SA194 Grade 7 designation is technically equivalent to ASTM A194 Grade 7 and is used where ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code certification is required. Jade Alloys supplies dual-certified A194/SA194 Grade 7 nuts with full 3.1 Mill Test Certificates from its Mumbai manufacturing facility.

ASTM Update — Grade 4 Discontinued: In 2017, ASTM formally removed Grade 4 nuts from the A194 specification. Grade 7 is the designated replacement. If your specifications still reference A194 Grade 4, Grade 7 is the correct current equivalent.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A194 Grade 7 Nuts

ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are produced from chromium-molybdenum alloy steels primarily AISI 4140, 4142, 4145, and their H-band equivalents. The presence of chromium distinguishes Grade 7 from the now-discontinued Grade 4.

In the oil and gas sector, their NACE MR0175 compliance makes them the standard specification for sour service wellhead and pipeline equipment. In power generation, they are used on steam boilers, condenser water boxes, and feedwater heater connections.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A194 Grade 7 Nuts

What is ASTM A194 Grade 7?
ASTM A194 Grade 7 is a standard specification for heavy hex nuts and internally threaded fasteners made from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (AISI 4140/4142/4145/4140H/4142H/4145H). The nuts are quenched and tempered to a Brinell hardness of 248–327 BHN. They are designed for high-temperature, high-pressure bolting applications and are the primary specification for alloy steel nuts in oil & gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries.
What is the hardness of ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts?
Completed ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts must have a Brinell hardness of 248–327 BHN (equivalent to Rockwell 24–35 HRC). Sample nuts tested after heat treatment must exhibit a minimum Brinell hardness of 201 BHN (minimum HRB 94). For NACE MR0175 sour-service compliance, hardness must not exceed 22 HRC (238 BHN).
Which bolt grade pairs with ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts?
ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are the alloy steel companion for ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolts in high-temperature flanged joints. They may also pair with ASTM A193 B16 bolts in certain elevated-temperature services where a Grade 16 nut is not specified. For general service B7 bolting, ASTM A194 Grade 2H is the standard companion but Grade 7 is preferred in demanding or sour-service environments.
What is the difference between Grade 7 and Grade 2H?
Grade 2H nuts are produced from medium carbon steel and meet general-purpose high-pressure requirements. Grade 7 nuts are produced from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (AISI 4140/4145H), which provides superior elevated-temperature strength retention and NACE MR0175 sour-service compliance when hardness is controlled to ≤22 HRC. Grade 7 is preferred for demanding oil & gas, refinery, and petrochemical applications where Grade 2H would not meet project specifications.
What is the difference between Grade 7 and Grade 7L?
Grade 7L is the low-temperature variant of Grade 7 designed for cryogenic service down to -150°F (-101°C). Both grades share the same Cr-Mo alloy steel composition and are quenched and tempered, but Grade 7L must additionally pass Charpy V-notch impact testing at -150°F. Grade 7 (without the 'L') covers standard and elevated-temperature service applications. Jade Alloys supplies both variants.
Why was ASTM A194 Grade 4 discontinued?
ASTM A194 Grade 4 was originally created as a lower-cost alternative to Grade 7 using molybdenum-only steel (no chromium). In practice, the AISI 4140/4145H steel used for Grade 7 is mass-produced and cheaper than the niche steel used for Grade 4, which negated the entire cost rationale for Grade 4. ASTM formally removed Grade 4 from the A194 specification in 2017 and explicitly designated Grade 7 as the replacement. Projects still referencing Grade 4 should substitute Grade 7.
Are ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts NACE MR0175 compliant?
Yes, ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour (H₂S-containing) service when supplied at a maximum hardness of 22 HRC (238 BHN). The standard A194 Grade 7 hardness range (248–327 BHN) exceeds the NACE limit, so sour-service Grade 7 nuts are specifically manufactured and tested to the tighter hardness window. Jade Alloys can supply NACE-compliant Grade 7 nuts with NACE-specific MTCs.
What is the ASME equivalent of ASTM A194 Grade 7?
ASME SA194 Grade 7 is the technically identical equivalent under the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code. The chemical, mechanical, hardness, and heat treatment requirements are the same. The ASME designation is used on projects where ASME BPVC certification is mandated. Jade Alloys supplies dual-stamped ASTM A194 / ASME SA194 Grade 7 nuts with supporting documentation.
What coatings are available for Grade 7 nuts?
Jade Alloys supplies ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts in the following surface finishes: plain (self-colour), hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153, black oxide, Xylan coating, PTFE coating, and zinc-nickel plating. Coating selection depends on the service environment and corrosion protection requirements. Galvanized nuts for use with galvanized B7 bolts are tapped oversize per ASTM A194 requirements to accommodate the coating thickness.
