ASTM A194 Grade 7 Nuts

  • ASTM A194 GRADE 7 NUTS

The ASTM A194 Grade 7 performance specification is one of the specifications of nuts produced out of carbon, alloy and stainless steel that is designed to be utilized in high pressure and/or high temperature service applications. These are the equivalent of high-strength bolts that have matching nuts in critical assemblies. The standard dimensions of Grade 7 nuts vary with the ASTM standard unless otherwise stated, which is the American National Standard Heavy Hex Series (ANSI B 18.2.2).

As to thread fit, nuts to a nominal size of 1 inch should employ UNC Series Class 2B. In the case of larger nuts that are larger than 1- inch, the UNC Series Class 2B fit or the 8 UN Series Class 2B fit can be used. Since ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are much stronger and more easily available, when ASTM A563 Grade DH nuts are unavailable in particular diameter or finish, they are often used instead.

ASTM A194 Grade 7 Nuts and ASME SA194 Gr 7 Hex Nuts Manufacturer & Supplier in India

We are the major manufacturer and supplier of ASTM A194 Grade 7 and ASME SA 194 Gr 7 Hex Nuts and Heavy Hex Nuts in India. They are chromium molybdenum alloy steel high-performance internally threaded fasteners that have been closely heat-treated. The nut design is very convenient when it comes to tightening needs of high torque.

Grade 7 nuts of our production are of high material requirements and compositions would match with alloy steel grades like AISI 4140 and 4145H. The rivets are formed through either hot forging, cold forging or machining of a heat-treated bar stock. The quenching and tempering required to achieve a high hardness (usually 248 to 327BHN) and high tensile strength (150ksi to 175ksi) is achieved at 595 degrees Celsius. We provide a full size array, imperial 1/4 to 1/2 inches and metric M6 to M100.

These bolts are imperative in operations in harsh conditions in key industries, such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation and chemical industries. They are critical parts of such equipment as coolers, heat exchangers, condensers, and boiler uses. We would be most prepared to provide your normal or special order needs of these premium nuts and allied washers.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A194 Grade 7 Nuts

What is ASTM A194 Grade 7 material?
ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are manufactured from medium carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy steel — specifically AISI 4140, AISI 4142, or AISI 4145H. This is a through-hardening alloy steel, not stainless steel. The alloy contains 0.75–1.20% chromium and 0.15–0.25% molybdenum, providing superior strength and toughness after quench-and-temper heat treatment. It should not be confused with Grade 410 martensitic stainless steel, which is a different material used for Grade 8S nuts.
What is the difference between A194 Grade 4 and Grade 7 nuts?
ASTM A194 Grade 4 and Grade 7 nuts have the same strength requirements and proof load specifications. The difference is in the alloy chemistry: Grade 4 is manufactured from carbon steel or low-alloy steel, while Grade 7 is manufactured from chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (AISI 4140/4145H). Grade 7 is typically preferred for elevated temperature service due to the superior hot strength and creep resistance of the Cr-Mo alloy.
What is the difference between Grade 7 and Grade 7M nuts?
Both ASTM A194 Grade 7 and Grade 7M use the same chromium-molybdenum alloy steel base material. The key difference is hardness control: Grade 7M imposes a maximum hardness limit of 235 HBW (Brinell) to comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements for sour service (H2S environments). Grade 7M is paired with ASTM A193 Grade B7M stud bolts for complete sour service assemblies, whereas standard Grade 7 is used with B7 bolts in non-sour high-temperature service.
What is the difference between ASTM A194 Grade 7 and Grade 2H nuts?
Grade 2H nuts are manufactured from medium carbon steel and are the most commonly specified nut for general high-strength service with A193 B7 bolts. Grade 7 nuts use chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (AISI 4140/4145H) and offer superior performance at elevated temperatures due to the Cr-Mo alloy's better hot strength and creep resistance. Both grades have the same proof load stress requirements (175 ksi for heavy hex). Grade 7 is typically specified when service temperatures exceed the practical limit for carbon steel — generally above 370°C (700°F).
Can ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts be used in NACE sour service?
Yes. Our ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are manufactured in compliance with NACE MR0103 / MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) environments. However, for fully qualified sour service (SSC-resistant service per ISO 15156), ASTM A194 Grade 7M is preferred, as it specifies a maximum hardness of 235 HBW to resist sulfide stress corrosion cracking. Both grades are available from Jade Alloys with full NACE compliance certification.
What is the metric equivalent of ASTM A194 Grade 7?
ASTM A194 Grade 7 corresponds to alloy steel grades AISI 4140 / AISI 4142 / AISI 4145H. The equivalent European standard is EN 10269 grade 42CrMo4 (material number 1.7225). We supply Grade 7 nuts in both imperial sizes (1/4" to 4") and metric sizes (M6 to M100) with dual ASTM and ASME certification.
What bolts do ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts pair with?
ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts are the standard mating nut for ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolts — the most widely used alloy steel stud bolt for pressure vessel and piping flanges. They are also compatible with ASTM A193 B16 bolts (for higher-temperature service) and ASTM A320 L7 bolts (for low-temperature / cryogenic service). The thread engagement length between B7 bolt and Grade 7 heavy hex nut provides the design proof load for standard ASME pressure vessel flange assemblies.
What coatings and finishes are available for ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts?
We supply ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts in the following finishes: Plain (as-machined/black), Hot-dip galvanized (HDG), Zinc electroplated, PTFE / Teflon coated (for chemical resistance), Black phosphate, and Cadmium plated (where permitted). The finish is specified per service environment — hot-dip galvanized is common for atmospheric / outdoor service, while plain finish is preferred for high-temperature pressure vessel applications where zinc coatings are not permitted.
