What is a Super Duplex Steel Round Bar?

Super Duplex Steel Round Bars are the high-performance evolution of standard duplex alloys. By raising chromium to around 25% and balancing nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen, these bars hold a near 50/50 microstructure of ferrite and austenite. That dual-phase structure is what gives a super duplex round bar roughly twice the yield strength of austenitic 304/316 while delivering elite resistance to chloride pitting, crevice attack and stress corrosion cracking.

Every super duplex bar we supply carries a PREN value above 40, which is the industry threshold that separates true super duplex from standard duplex. A Super Duplex Steel Round Bar is a solid bar rolled or forged from a dual-phase stainless steel containing roughly 25% chromium, 6–8% nickel, 3–5% molybdenum and 0.24–0.32% nitrogen, giving a near 50/50 ferrite–austenite structure and a PREN above 40. It combines high tensile strength with elite resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking.

2. What is the difference between duplex and super duplex round bar?

Duplex contains about 22% chromium with a PREN of around 34–36, while super duplex contains about 25% chromium with a PREN of 40 or above. Super duplex therefore offers higher strength and much better pitting resistance, making it suitable for seawater, sour service and extremely caustic conditions, whereas duplex is adequate for mild to moderate corrosion.

Super duplex is generally used between −50 °C and 300 °C. S32750 (2507) should be restricted to below 316 °C (600 °F), and S32760 is not recommended for extended exposure above 300 °C (572 °F), because prolonged high-temperature exposure reduces toughness and corrosion resistance.

7. What is the difference between S32750 and S32760?

Their chemistries are similar, but S32760 contains added tungsten (0.5–1.0%) and copper (0.5–1.0%). The copper gives S32760 better resistance in non-oxidising and mineral acids such as hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, while S32750 is the more widely specified general super duplex grade.
