What is a Stainless Steel Round Bar?

A stainless steel round bar is a solid cylindrical section produced by hot rolling, forging or cold drawing. Its circular cross-section spreads load evenly and avoids the localised stress points you get with angular profiles which is why the SS round bar is the default for shafts, axles, pins, valve stems, industrial rollers and machining stock.

Every stainless steel bar contains chromium, which forms a self-repairing passive oxide film on the surface. More chromium means faster repassivation and better corrosion resistance; adding molybdenum as in SS 316/316L or SS 904L extends that protection into chloride-rich and marine service.

As one of India’s established stainless steel round bar suppliers, Jade Alloys stocks material that combines high tensile strength, high-temperature tolerance and mechanical integrity for heavy-duty industrial work. The same product is often listed as a stainless steel rod, and we supply it alongside our full round bar range, sheets and plates and stainless steel fasteners.

Stainless Steel Round Bar Manufacturer in India

Jade Alloys is a Stainless Steel Round Bar manufacturer in India producing fully traceable, mill-tested, export-ready material to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479 the specifications covering hot-rolled and cold-finished bars, shapes and forgings for corrosion-resistant service.

Choice of finish follows the end use:

  • Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Round Bar: Rougher surface, wider tolerance, best economy. Right where strength and corrosion resistance matter and appearance doesn’t: structural members, forging blanks, machining stock.
  • Cold Drawn Stainless Steel Round Bar: Smooth bright surface, tight h8–h11 tolerance, higher yield strength from work hardening. Preferred for architectural work, outdoor fixtures and parts going straight into assembly.
  • Peeled, Turned & Ground: For shafting and close-tolerance machining where concentricity is critical.

We hold stainless steel bar stock from 5 mm to 450 mm in 2 m to 6 m mill lengths, plus hex, square, flat, threaded and half-round profiles. If you need higher-alloy material, we also manufacture Duplex, Super Duplex, Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy and Titanium round bars.

Austenitic grades run a thermal conductivity of roughly 16.2 W/m·K and specific heat of ~500 J/kg·K; martensitic and PH grades conduct heat noticeably better (24–30 W/m·K), which matters for machining and welding heat input.

Stainless Steel Round Bars Manufacturing Process

Scrap, ferroalloys and DRI are melted in an Electric Arc Furnace, then refined through AOD/VOD to hit exact chromium, nickel and carbon targets. The molten steel is continuously cast into blooms or billets, reheated and hot rolled or forged into round, hex, square and flat sections. Bars are then annealed and pickled to remove scale and restore the passive layer, cold finished where required (drawn, peeled, turned, centreless ground or polished), and finally tested, marked, bundled and dispatched.

Testing & Certification

Every heat is tested before dispatch: tensile and yield, hardness, Charpy impact, bend, intergranular corrosion (ASTM A262 Practice A/E), 100% ultrasonic (ASTM A388 / EN 10308), PMI, spectro chemical analysis, and micro/macro examination.

Documents supplied: EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2) Mill Test Certificate, raw material test report, third-party inspection by Lloyd’s / SGS / BV / TÜV / DNV on request, Form A / Country of Origin, fumigation certificate and packing list.

Working With SS Round Bar

Cutting — bandsaw for accurate workshop cuts, angle grinder for site work, chop saw for clean square ends, CNC/automatic saw for volume cut-to-length. Always use stainless-dedicated blades and wheels; carbon steel contamination causes surface rusting.

Welding — match the filler to the base metal (ER308L for 304, ER316L for 316), clean and degrease thoroughly, TIG for precision or MIG for speed, keep heat input controlled to avoid sensitisation, then pickle and passivate to restore corrosion resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions - Stainless Steel Round Bars

1. What is a stainless steel round bar used for?

Machined and load-bearing components — shafts, axles, pins, bolts, valve stems, rollers and structural supports. The round cross-section distributes load evenly and machines cleanly, making it standard across construction, automotive, marine, aerospace, food processing and general engineering.

2. Is stainless steel 100% rust proof?

No. It is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. The chromium forms a passive oxide film that self-repairs, but in aggressive chloride or acid environments even 304 can pit. For marine or chemical service choose 316, 316L, 904L or SMO 254.

3. What is the difference between hot rolled and cold drawn stainless steel round bar?

Hot rolled bar is formed above the recrystallisation temperature — rougher surface, looser tolerance, lower cost, ideal for structural and machining stock. Cold drawn bar is pulled through a die at room temperature — smooth bright surface, h8–h11 tolerance, higher yield strength from work hardening, right for visible fixtures and ready-to-assemble parts.

4. What sizes of SS round bar do you stock?

5 mm to 450 mm diameter, in standard lengths of 2000–6000 mm, with cut-to-length and chamfering available. Square, hex, flat, threaded and half-round profiles are also stocked.

5. What is the price of stainless steel round bar per kg in India?

Roughly ₹414–₹578 per kg for standard grades, rising to ₹1,595+ for high-nickel and specialty grades. Final pricing depends on grade, diameter, finish, quantity and prevailing nickel prices — contact us for a firm quotation.

6. Which is better for marine use, 304 or 316?

316. Its 2–3% molybdenum sharply improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides. For continuous seawater immersion, step up to 904L, SMO 254 or a duplex grade.

7. Do you provide material test certificates?

Yes, EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 on request) with every consignment, covering chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment and heat number. Third-party inspection can be arranged.

8. How do I calculate the weight of a stainless steel round bar?

Weight (kg/m) = Diameter (mm) × Diameter (mm) × 0.00623. A 20 mm bar works out to 2.49 kg per metre. Our Metal Weights Calculator does it instantly.

9. Do you export stainless steel round bars?

Yes, to over 50 countries across the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Americas, with complete export documentation and freight coordination.
