ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers

ANSI and ASME guidelines are closely aligned with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) fastener standards. ASME standards are similar to ASTM in chemical and mechanical property requirements, and are normally preceded by an “S” – for example, ASME SA-193 is analogous to ASTM A193. Some ASME standards concern dimensional specifications and are typically referenced on engineering drawings to indicate fastener type, similar to ANSI standards.

BS - British Standards

British fastener standards were formally withdrawn some time ago, but remain widely referenced across the fastener industry in their aftermath. Although ISO and EN standards were intended to take over from British standards, in practice the German DIN standards have become the de facto standard in much of the international fastener market.

DIN - Deutsches Institut fur Normung

DIN stands for Deutsches Institut fur Normung (German Institute for Standardization). International and European standards have progressively replaced many national DIN standards; nevertheless, DIN standards remain in active use for products that currently lack an equivalent ISO or EN standard. DIN standards prefixed “DIN V” (Vornorm, or pre-standard) are drafts or early-stage standards that have not yet completed full standardization. Understanding Fastener Property Classes

Alongside dimensional standards, bolts and nuts are marked with a property class (also called a grade) that defines mechanical strength. Understanding this system helps in cross-referencing metric and inch fasteners:

Metric Property Classes (ISO 898-1)

Metric bolt property classes use a two-number system, such as 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9, marked on the bolt head:

  • The first number is 1/100th of the nominal tensile strength in MPa – for example, “10” indicates 1000 MPa minimum tensile strength
  • The second number is 10x the ratio of yield strength to tensile strength – for example, “.9” indicates a yield strength approximately 90% of tensile strength
  • A Class 8.8 bolt therefore has approximately 800 MPa tensile strength and 640 MPa yield strength

Inch (SAE) Property Grades

Inch-series bolts commonly reference SAE J429 Grades 2, 5, and 8, or specific ASTM material specifications such as A193 and A320 that designate materials by application (high-temperature, low-temperature, corrosive service) rather than a numeric grade alone.

Thread Series

Metric threads follow ISO 68-1 and are designated “M” followed by nominal diameter and pitch (e.g., M12 x 1.75 coarse, M12 x 1.25 fine). Inch threads follow the Unified Thread Standard: UNC (Unified National Coarse) for general use, UNF (Unified National Fine) for higher-strength and vibration-resistant applications, and 8-UN, an 8-threads-per-inch series used specifically in heavy bolting to ASTM A193 for diameters above 1 inch.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a fastener standard and a fastener specification?

A dimensional standard (e.g., DIN 933, ISO 4014) defines physical dimensions, head size, thread pitch, length. A material specification (e.g., ASTM A193) defines chemistry, mechanical properties, and heat treatment. A single fastener is ordered against both.

2. Should I specify DIN or ISO fastener standards?

ISO standards are the internationally harmonized successors to many legacy DIN numbers and are increasingly preferred on new international and export project specifications. DIN standards remain valid, widely stocked, and dimensionally equivalent in most cases (e.g., DIN 933 = ISO 4017, DIN 934 = ISO 4032), so either can typically be specified interchangeably unless your project mandates one system.

3. What does a fastener property class like 8.8 or 10.9 mean?
