What Is Stainless Steel 316/316L Round Bar?

Stainless Steel 316 is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The addition of 2–3% molybdenum is what sets it apart from the more common grade 304: molybdenum dramatically improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments such as seawater, brines, and many process chemicals. This is why 316 is often called marine-grade stainless steel.

A 316 round bar is a solid, straight length of this alloy produced by hot rolling, forging, or cold finishing. It serves as raw stock for machining shafts, valve stems, fasteners, pump components, pins, and fabricated assemblies.

316L is the low-carbon variant of the same alloy. The “L” designates a maximum carbon content of 0.030% (versus 0.08% for standard 316). That lower carbon level suppresses chromium-carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, a phenomenon called sensitization which makes the 316L round bar the preferred choice for welded and heavy-gauge fabrications.

Because both grades share nearly identical composition apart from carbon, mills frequently produce dual-certified 316/316L material that meets the requirements of both grades from a single heat. Jade Alloys stocks dual-certified bar wherever possible, giving fabricators maximum flexibility.

316 vs 316L: Which Grade Do You Need?

The two grades are close cousins, but the right choice depends on how the bar will be processed and where it will operate.

Consideration SS 316 SS 316L
Carbon content 0.08% max 0.030% max
Welding Good; risk of sensitization on heavy sections Excellent; resists intergranular corrosion after welding
Strength at ambient temperature Slightly higher Slightly lower yield/tensile
High-temperature strength (creep) Better above ~500 °C Lower
Typical use Machined parts, general service Welded fabrications, pharma, food, cryogenic-adjacent
Certification UNS S31600 UNS S31603

Rule of thumb: if the part will be welded and cannot be re-annealed afterward, specify 316L. If the part is machined from solid or operates at elevated temperature where creep strength matters, standard 316 is often the better fit. When in doubt, order dual-certified 316/316L and cover both requirements. Our technical team is happy to advise on grade selection for your specific application.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 316 Round Bar

The composition is what gives 316/316L its corrosion resistance and weldability. The table below reflects the requirements of ASTM A276 for both grades.

Element SS 316 (S31600) SS 316L (S31603)
Carbon (C) 0.08 max 0.030 max
Chromium (Cr) 16.0 – 18.0 16.0 – 18.0
Nickel (Ni) 10.0 – 14.0 10.0 – 14.0
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.0 – 3.0 2.0 – 3.0
Manganese (Mn) 2.0 max 2.0 max
Silicon (Si) 0.75 max 0.75 max

Sulphur (S) 0.030 max 0.030 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.10 max 0.10 max
Iron (Fe) Balance Balance

Why the numbers matter: the 16–18% chromium forms the passive oxide film that makes the steel “stainless.” The 2–3% molybdenum extends that protection into chloride service. The 10–14% nickel stabilises the austenitic structure, delivering excellent toughness and formability. In 316L, the tightly controlled carbon prevents carbide precipitation that would otherwise deplete chromium at grain boundaries during welding.

Applications of 316/316L Round Bars

The corrosion resistance and toughness of these bars make them a workhorse across demanding industries.

  • Marine & offshore — propeller shafts, boat fittings, dock hardware, and desalination components rely on 316’s chloride resistance. This is the classic marine-grade application.
  • Oil & gas — valve stems, pump shafts, wellhead components, and downhole tooling. 316/316L conforms to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements when supplied in the correct hardness condition for sour service.
  • Chemical & petrochemical — reactor internals, agitator shafts, and fasteners exposed to acids and process media where 304 would corrode.
  • Pharmaceutical & food processing — 316L is the standard for hygienic equipment, mixing shafts, and CIP-compatible components thanks to its cleanability and weldability.
  • Power generation — heat-exchanger tie rods, turbine components, and fasteners in condensate and cooling-water service.
  • Architecture & infrastructure — balustrades, anchor bolts, and structural pins in coastal or de-icing-salt environments.
  • Aerospace & defence — precision-machined parts to AMS 5648 / AMS 5653.

Frequently Asked Questions - Stainless Steel 316/316L Round Bar

1.What is the difference between 316 and 316L round bar?

The only significant difference is carbon content — 0.08% max for 316 versus 0.030% max for 316L. The lower carbon in 316L prevents chromium-carbide precipitation during welding, making it the better choice for welded fabrications. Mechanically the two are almost identical, and dual-certified 316/316L bar satisfies both.

2. Is 316 stainless steel round bar magnetic?

In the annealed condition it is essentially non-magnetic. Heavy cold working, such as drawing or machining, can induce slight magnetism at the surface, but the bulk material remains austenitic.

3. What standards do your 316/316L round bars meet?

Primarily ASTM A276 and ASTM A479 (and their ASME SA equivalents). We also supply to AMS 5648 (316) and AMS 5653 (316L) for aerospace requirements when specified at order.

4. What sizes of 316 round bar do you stock?

Round bar from 4 mm to 500 mm diameter, in 1–6 metre lengths, with cut-to-length available. We also carry square, hex, flat, bright, forged, hollow, and threaded bar.

5. Do you provide mill test certificates?

Yes. Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate traceable to the heat number, plus chemical and mechanical reports. PMI and third-party inspection are available on request.

6. Is 316L suitable for seawater and marine use?

316/316L is widely used as marine-grade stainless and performs well in most marine service. In hot, high-chloride, or splash-zone conditions where stress corrosion cracking is a risk, duplex or super-austenitic grades may be more suitable — we can advise and supply those.

7. Can 316 round bar be used in sour (NACE) service?

Yes, when supplied in the correct hardness condition, 316/316L conforms to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. State the requirement at enquiry so we furnish the correct material and documentation.

8. What is the density and how do I calculate bar weight?

The density is 8.0 g/cm³. For round bar, weight (kg/m) ≈ 0.00617 × diameter² (mm). Our online metal weight calculator handles round, square, hex, and flat sections instantly.

9. Do you offer 316L bright bar and precision-ground bar?

Yes. We supply bright drawn, centreless ground, and turned-ground-polished (TGP) bar for machining-ready and instrumentation applications, in tolerance bands from h8 to h13.

10. Which finishes are available on 316/316L round bar?

Black, hot rolled annealed and pickled, cold drawn, bright polished, rough turned, peeled, centreless ground, smooth turned, and matt finishes.
