Stainless steel 304 round bar is the most widely used grade in the austenitic stainless steel family. The 18 to 20 percent chromium and 8 to 10.5 percent nickel make-up provides excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability in marine, chemical and food contact applications. It is also identified in Aerospace and defence-related fabrication as in AMS 5639. The 304L type has a maximum of 0.03% of carbon eliminating sensitisation at the grain boundaries during welding, and the 304L stainless bar is the industry standard choice of welded pressure vessel, chemical plant pipework and marine fabrication where post-weld heat treatment cannot be afforded. Both grades comply with EN 10088-3 (1.4301 / 1.4307) and are stocked under ASTM A276, ASTM A479, and AMS 5639.

Cold Finished Stainless Steel 304 Round Bar – Dimensional Tolerances
Cold finished (cold drawn) stainless steel 304 round bar is produced to close dimensional tolerances per ASTM A276 and EN 10278. Standard tolerance grades for cold drawn bar are h9, h10, and h11. For precision-ground bar, h8 is achievable. All tolerance specifications are available on request and can be confirmed on the Mill Test Certificate.
Hot Rolled 304 Stainless Steel Bar – Dimensional Tolerances
Hot rolled 304 stainless steel round bar is produced to ASTM A276 Table 3 tolerances and EN 10060 for the European market. Standard ovality and straightness tolerances apply for diameters above 25mm. For tight-tolerance requirements on hot rolled bar, specify peeled and turned (P&T) finish at the time of enquiry.
Stainless Steel 304 vs 304L Round Bar – Key Differences
The primary difference between 304 and 304L stainless steel round bar is carbon content. SS 304 has a maximum carbon of 0.07%, while 304L stainless steel bar is limited to 0.03%. This lower carbon makes 304L stainless bar the preferred choice for welded fabrications, where carbide precipitation at grain boundaries — known as sensitisation — can reduce corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. For non-welded applications, standard 304 stainless steel bar offers equivalent performance at comparable pricing.
