Welding and Fabrication of Hastelloy C276 Round Bar
Hastelloy C276 can be joined by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) processes. Low heat input is recommended to minimise the risk of hot cracking and to preserve corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding should be avoided due to the risk of carburisation.
The alloy can be used in the as-welded condition for most chemical process applications due to its low carbon content, which minimises carbide precipitation. For components that have been hot-formed, a solution anneal at 1121°C (2050°F) followed by rapid quenching is recommended to restore the alloy to its optimum corrosion-resistant condition.
During machining, note that Hastelloy C276 work-hardens rapidly. Use sharp tooling, appropriate cutting speeds, and adequate lubrication or coolant to achieve acceptable surface finish and tool life.
