Stainless Steel 904L Sheets & Plates — Verified Manufacturer & Exporter from Mumbai

Stainless Steel 904L Sheets & Plates

Jade Alloys is ISO 9001 certified manufacturer, stockist and exporter of Stainless Steel 904L Sheets & Plates from ready-stock facility in Mumbai, India to industries of 50+ countries. We can provide material to ASTM A240, ASME SA240 and ASTM B625 standards in various thickness, width, surface and product forms.

Stainless Steel 904L (UNS N08904 / WNR 1.4539) is a low-carbon, superaustenitic stainless steel designed to provide outstanding corrosion resistance in extremely corrosive applications. The alloy composition contains a higher percentage of nickel (23 – 28%), chromium (19 – 23%), molybdenum (4 – 5%) and copper (1 – 2%) which makes it one of the most corrosion resistant grades in the commercial stainless steel range. This grade was originally designed to accommodate the use as dilutions for concentrated sulfuric acid, and has also been seen to be equally effective in hot phosphoric acid, seawater and most organic acid conditions.

When SS 316L and 317L fail under certain conditions, 904L remains unaffected and it is an extremely resistant material to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chlorides induced stress corrosion cracking, yet still retains easy forming, weldability and is non-magnetic. These are all ready stock and can be dispatched the same week for 904L Cold Rolled Sheets, Hot Rolled Plates, Chequered Plates, Shim Sheets, Perforated Sheets, Coils, Strips and Foils with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates.

Note — Role of alloying elements: Chromium (19–23%) provides the base oxidation and corrosion resistance. Nickel (23–28%) enhances toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Molybdenum (4–5%) dramatically improves pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments. Copper (1–2%) is specifically added to improve resistance to sulfuric acid — a characteristic that distinguishes 904L from most other stainless grades.

Property SS 904L SS 317L SS 316L
Ni Content 23–28% 11–15% 10–14%
Mo Content 4.0–5.0% 3.0–4.0% 2.0–3.0%
Cu Content 1.0–2.0% (key differentiator) None None
Sulfuric Acid Resistance Excellent (0–100% conc.) Moderate Limited
Pitting Resistance (PREN) ~36 ~32 ~26
Chloride SCC Resistance Good Fair Fair
Relative Cost Higher Moderate Lower
Best For Sulfuric acid, marine, aggressive chlorides Moderate acid/chemical service General corrosive service

904L is the preferred choice when corrosion media includes dilute sulfuric acid at temperatures up to 35°C across the full concentration range (0–100%), or when the environment involves hot phosphoric acid, seawater service, or elevated chloride concentrations that would cause pitting failures in 316L or 317L. For less demanding environments, 316L or 317L may offer adequate performance at a lower cost.

Frequently Asked Questions — Stainless Steel 904L Sheets & Plates

What is the difference between Stainless Steel 904L and 316L?
Stainless Steel 904L is a superaustenitic alloy with significantly higher nickel (23–28%) and molybdenum (4–5%) content than 316L (10–14% Ni, 2–3% Mo). The key differentiator is the addition of 1–2% copper in 904L, which provides exceptional resistance to dilute and concentrated sulfuric acid — an environment where 316L would fail rapidly. 904L also offers superior pitting resistance (PREN ~36 vs ~26 for 316L) and better performance in chloride-containing media.
What is the maximum service temperature of Stainless Steel 904L?
The maximum recommended continuous service temperature for Stainless Steel 904L is 450°C (842°F). Above this temperature, the alloy may be susceptible to embrittlement. For higher-temperature applications, grades such as Incoloy 825 or Inconel 625 should be considered.
Is Stainless Steel 904L magnetic?
No. Stainless Steel 904L is a fully austenitic, non-magnetic alloy in its annealed condition. Its high nickel content stabilizes the austenite phase, ensuring it remains non-magnetic even after cold working — unlike some lower-nickel austenitic grades.
What is the ASTM standard for 904L Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates?
The primary ASTM standard for 904L Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates is ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 (for flat-rolled plate, sheet, and strip). ASTM B625 / ASME SB625 covers UNS N08904 in sheet, strip, and plate form specifically. Additional standards include ASTM B677, ASTM A480, and ASTM A480M for dimensions and general requirements.
What is the HSN code for Stainless Steel 904L Sheets?
The HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code for Stainless Steel 904L flat-rolled products (sheets and plates) is 72193390. This code is used for customs classification in India and internationally for import/export documentation.
Does Stainless Steel 904L rust?
Stainless Steel 904L is highly resistant to rusting and general corrosion. Its elevated chromium content (19–23%) forms a stable, self-repairing passive oxide layer that protects against rust in most atmospheric, aqueous, and mildly acidic environments. In extremely aggressive environments, such as hot hydrochloric acid or high-concentration halide solutions, even 904L may experience corrosion — in such cases, higher nickel alloys like Hastelloy C276 or Inconel 625 should be considered.
What industries use Stainless Steel 904L Sheets and Plates most?
The principal industries using SS 904L include chemical processing (especially sulfuric and phosphoric acid plants), oil and gas (sour service, offshore), fertilizer manufacturing, pulp and paper, power generation (FGD systems), marine and desalination, and food processing. The alloy is valued wherever standard 316L or 317L lacks adequate corrosion resistance.
Can 904L Stainless Steel Plates be cut to custom sizes?
Yes. Jade Alloys offers custom cut-to-size service for SS 904L Plates and Sheets using laser cutting, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, and mechanical shearing. Material can be supplied in standard mill sizes or cut precisely to your drawing dimensions. Contact our sales team with your required dimensions and quantity.
What is the price of Stainless Steel 904L Plates per kg?
The price of Stainless Steel 904L Plates varies based on thickness, width, surface finish, quantity, and current Ni/Mo surcharges. As 904L contains 23–28% nickel and 4–5% molybdenum, its price is sensitive to nickel market fluctuations. For an accurate, current price per kg, please contact Jade Alloys directly — we provide same-day quotations with current pricing, dispatch timelines, and certification details.
What certifications does Jade Alloys provide with 904L material?
Jade Alloys provides EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates as standard with all Stainless Steel 904L Sheets and Plates. We are ISO 9001 certified and supply NACE MR0175-compliant material for sour service applications. Third-party inspection reports from SGS or Bureau Veritas are available on request before dispatch.
