What Are Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes
Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy in which carbon is the principal alloying element, with only residual amounts of manganese, silicon, sulphur, and phosphorus. Depending on carbon content, carbon steel is broadly classed as low-carbon/mild steel (up to 0.30% C), medium-carbon (0.30-0.60% C), and high-carbon (above 0.60% C) with low and medium carbon grades forming the bulk of pipe and tube production. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and toughness vary directly with carbon content and heat treatment, which is why carbon steel remains one of the most versatile and widely specified piping materials globally.
Carbon steel pipe refers to hollow, round sections produced to a nominal bore (NB) and schedule designation, primarily used to convey liquids, gases, steam, and slurries under pressure. Carbon steel tube, by contrast, is manufactured to a precise outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT), and is generally selected for structural, mechanical, and heat-transfer applications such as boiler tubes, heat-exchanger tubes, condenser tubes, and hydraulic/instrumentation tubing, where tighter dimensional tolerance and surface finish are required.
Carbon steel is favoured across industries because it offers a dependable combination of strength, weldability, machinability, and affordability compared with alloy and stainless steels making it the default material choice wherever the service environment is not aggressively corrosive.
Types of Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes
Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe
Manufactured without a weld seam by piercing and rolling a heated solid billet. The absence of a longitudinal seam gives uniform mechanical properties in all directions, making seamless pipe the preferred choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical service in refineries, power plants, and chemical processing.
ERW Carbon Steel Pipe (Electric Resistance Welded)
Produced by cold-forming steel strip or coil into a cylindrical shape and fusing the longitudinal edges using high-frequency electric resistance welding, without filler metal. ERW pipe is a cost-effective option for general piping, water lines, structural applications, and lower-pressure process systems, typically available from 1/2″ NB to 24″ NB.
LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded)
Formed from steel plate and welded longitudinally using submerged arc welding. Best suited for large-diameter, thick-wall applications such as oil and gas transmission, offshore pipelines, and piling, generally available from 16″ NB to 100″ NB.
SSAW Carbon Steel Pipe (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded)
Manufactured by spirally forming steel strip and submerged-arc welding both the inner and outer seams. Commonly used for large-diameter water transmission lines, piling, and structural applications where pressure requirements are moderate.
Manufacturing Process of Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes
- Seamless Pipe & Tube: A heated, solid round billet is pierced with a mandrel to form a hollow shell, then rolled and sized to the required OD and wall thickness. No longitudinal seam is present.
- ERW Pipe & Tube: Flat steel strip or coil is cold-formed into a cylindrical shape and the longitudinal edges are fused by high-frequency electric resistance welding. The weld seam is typically heat-treated to normalize the microstructure before sizing and cutting.
- LSAW / SSAW Pipe: For larger diameters, plate is formed and welded using submerged arc welding — longitudinally (LSAW) or helically (SSAW/spiral) — to produce large-diameter pipe for cross-country pipelines, water transmission, and structural piling.
- Cold Drawing (Tubes): Seamless hollows are cold-drawn through a die to achieve tight dimensional tolerance, superior surface finish, and enhanced mechanical properties, followed by heat treatment in a controlled-atmosphere furnace.
- Heat Treatment & Finishing: Pipes and tubes are supplied in as-rolled, normalized, or annealed condition as required by the specification, followed by straightening, end-facing/bevelling, hydrostatic or NDT testing, and marking.
Seamless vs Welded Carbon Steel Pipe
For critical high-pressure, high-temperature service refineries, power plants, boilers, seamless carbon steel pipe is generally specified. For large-diameter transmission lines, structural applications, and cost-sensitive projects, welded carbon steel pipe is the standard choice.
