What is Hastelloy C22 — UNS N06022 | Werkstoff Nr. 2.4602?

hastelloy-c22-sheets

Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4602) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy per ASTM B575, carrying 20–22.5% Cr, 12.5–14.5% Mo, and 2.5–3.5% W. The tungsten addition absent from Hastelloy C276 maintains passivity in oxidizing acids, mixed-acid media, and wet chlorine environments where 316L stainless steel and even Hastelloy C276 suffer accelerated attack. Chemical plant operators select C22 specifically where nitric acid concentration exceeds 30% or when hydrochloric acid and oxidizing chlorides co-exist in the same process stream.

Jade Alloys holds ready stock in 14 sheet thicknesses (0.4 mm to 6.0 mm) and 13 plate thicknesses (8 mm to 120 mm), dispatched within 3 working days from our Khetwadi, Mumbai warehouse.

Hastelloy C22 Chemical Composition (ASTM B575 / UNS N06022)

The composition below gives Hastelloy C22 its layered corrosion defence. Tungsten (W) at 2.50–3.50% is the critical differentiating element versus Hastelloy C276 (which contains no tungsten) — this addition delivers superior performance in mixed-acid and chlorinated service.

W = Tungsten. This element is absent from Hastelloy C276 (N10276) — it is the primary reason C22 outperforms C276 in oxidizing and mixed-acid environments.

WELDING & FABRICATION

Hastelloy C22 is readily weldable by all conventional processes. The low carbon content (0.010% max) eliminates grain-boundary carbide precipitation meaning NO post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is required, and the material can be put directly into service in the as-welded condition.

Welding Process / Parameter Details
GTAW (TIG) Preferred for precision welds, thin sheets, and high-purity applications.
GMAW (MIG) Suitable for automated welding of medium and heavy plates.
SMAW (Stick) General-purpose; well-suited for field welding and repair.
SAW (Submerged Arc) For heavy plates (>12 mm) and high-deposition applications.
Plasma Welding Suitable for precision overlay and thin-section work.
Filler Metal ERNiCrMo-10 (AWS A5.14) — matching C22 filler.
Welding Electrode AWS A5.11 ENiCrMo-10
Post-Weld Heat Treatment NOT REQUIRED. Carbon is controlled to 0.010% max, preventing grain-boundary carbide precipitation in the weld HAZ. Hastelloy C22 can be placed directly into service in the as-welded condition. Welding procedures are qualified per ASME Section IX.
ASME Qualification Welding procedures qualified per ASME Section IX.
Sensitisation Range Avoid prolonged exposure in the 600–1,100 °C range.

Recommendation
If your process involves oxidizing acids, mixed acids, wet chlorine, or chloride-rich media (seawater, FGD, pharma CIP), choose Hastelloy C22. If your primary challenge is strongly reducing conditions (concentrated HCl, sulfuric acid), Hastelloy C276 is preferred. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Hastelloy C22?

Hastelloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy (UNS N06022, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4602) per ASTM B575. It contains 20–22.5% chromium, 12.5–14.5% molybdenum, and 2.5–3.5% tungsten. The tungsten addition distinguishes it from C276 and provides superior resistance to oxidizing acids, wet chlorine, mixed-acid environments, and chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion.

How does Hastelloy C22 differ from stainless steel?

Standard stainless steels such as 304 and 316L fail rapidly in oxidizing acids above dilute concentrations, wet chlorine, mixed-acid media, and seawater pitting environments. Hastelloy C22 contains approximately 58% nickel, 22% chromium, 14% molybdenum, and 3% tungsten, providing 10–100× longer service life in aggressive chemical processing environments.

Which is better — Hastelloy C22 or C276?

It depends on the corrosive media. C22 is superior in oxidizing acid service, mixed-acid environments, wet chlorine, and chloride-induced pitting due to its tungsten content. C276 is preferred for strongly reducing conditions such as concentrated hydrochloric acid and pure sulfuric acid. For FGD systems, seawater service, pharmaceutical acid cleaning, and chlorinated process streams, C22 is generally the stronger choice.

What is the maximum service temperature for Hastelloy C22 plates?

Hastelloy C22 is rated for continuous service up to 677°C (1250°F) and intermittent service up to 1093°C (2000°F).

Can Hastelloy C22 sheets be welded without post-weld heat treatment?

Yes. The carbon content is controlled to 0.010% maximum, which prevents sensitisation in the weld heat-affected zone. Hastelloy C22 can therefore be used in the as-welded condition without PWHT, per ASTM B575 Annex A. Welding procedures are qualified per ASME Section IX using ERNiCrMo-10 filler metal.

What is the price of Hastelloy C22 sheet per kg in India?

Indicative pricing for Hastelloy C22 sheets below 3 mm is approximately INR 2,800–3,200 per kg. Plates from 3–12 mm are approximately INR 3,000–3,500 per kg, while coil and strip products are approximately INR 2,600–3,000 per kg. Actual pricing depends on thickness, quantity, finish, and prevailing LME nickel rates.

What is the HS Code for Hastelloy C22 plates?

The HS Code for Hastelloy C22 sheets and plates (nickel alloy sheets and plates) is 75062000. This code is commonly used for customs clearance and export documentation.

Do you supply Hastelloy C22 with EN 10204 3.2 certification?

Yes. Standard supply includes EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates. EN 10204 3.2 certification with third-party witnessing is available upon request and typically requires an additional 5–7 working days.

Is Hastelloy C22 suitable for seawater and marine applications?

Yes. Hastelloy C22's high chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten content provides excellent resistance to seawater, brine, and chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. It is widely used in desalination plants, offshore heat exchangers, and seawater handling systems.

What is the minimum order quantity for Hastelloy C22 sheets?

There is no fixed minimum order quantity. Hastelloy C22 sheets and plates can be supplied as cut-to-size pieces for maintenance and R&D requirements as well as large-volume orders for plant construction projects.

What welding processes are recommended for Hastelloy C22 plates?

Hastelloy C22 can be welded using GTAW (TIG) for thin sheets and high-purity applications, GMAW (MIG) for automated plate welding, SMAW (Stick) for field repairs, SAW for heavy plates above 12 mm, and plasma welding for overlays and thin sections. The recommended filler metal is ERNiCrMo-10 (AWS A5.14). No post-weld heat treatment is required because the alloy's low carbon content prevents sensitisation in the heat-affected zone.
