ASTM A193 Grade B16 specification describes the specifications of the external threaded fasteners (bolts, studs, screws, threaded rods, and others) that should be used in high-tensile bolting in harsh conditions. These fasteners are specifically made to be used in service at high temperature and high pressure, or both.
The ASTM standard outlines the necessary requirements like chemical composition, mechanical properties (tensile, yield strength, and hardness), heat treatment, and marking of the product. It’s also the first raw material that is required to be used in the production. B16 in itself is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel that develops the required strength through heat treatment.
This is an alloy steel material that is extensively used in petroleum and chemical construction fields in the manufacture of high-pressure vessels, valves, fittings, and flanges, among others. Although material is sometimes packaged with National Coarse (UNC) thread Pitch, traditional high-pressure usage usually indicates the thread count of 8 threads per inch (tpi) in sizes larger than an inch.
