What Is ASTM A307? — Specification Overview

ASTM A307 (ASME SA307) covers the chemical and mechanical requirements for carbon steel bolts, studs, and threaded rods from 1/4″ (M6) to 4″ (M100) diameter. The specification defines two active grades — Grade A and Grade B plus the now-withdrawn Grade C (superseded by ASTM F1554 Grade 36).

The “307” in the designation is a sequentially assigned ASTM number; “A” denotes ferrous metals. The specification does NOT apply to machine screws, thread-cutting/forming screws, or mechanical expansion anchors. Unlike higher-strength bolting such as ASTM A325 or ASTM A193 B7, ASTM A307 fasteners are not quench-and-tempered — making them economical for non-critical, moderate-load applications where code compliance demands low-carbon steel.

At a glance ASTM A307 provides a minimum 60 ksi tensile strength from plain carbon steel without heat treatment; ASTM A325 delivers 120 ksi from medium carbon steel via quench-and-temper; ASTM A193 B7 achieves 125 ksi from Cr-Mo alloy steel rated up to 450°C. For general construction and low-pressure flanged joints, A307 is the most cost-effective, code-compliant choice.

For high-strength structural connections requiring 120 ksi, see our ASTM A325 Bolts page. For high-temperature pressure-vessel bolting, see our ASTM A193 B7 Bolts page.

ASTM A307 Grades — A, B, and C Explained

307A 307A Headed bolts, threaded rods and bent bolts intended for general applications.
307B 307B Heavy hex bolts and studs intended for flanged joints in piping systems with cast iron flanges.
307C 307C Non-headed anchor bolts, either bent or straight, intended for structural anchorage purposes. The end of a grade C anchor bolt intended to project from the concrete will be painted green for identification purposes. Permanent marking is a supplemental requirement.

* Grade C was officially replaced by ASTM F1554 Grade 36 as of August 2007. Jade Alloys can still supply Grade C anchor bolts when specifically required by project specifications — confirm with your engineer. We also stock ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchors.

Applications of ASTM A307 Bolts by Industry

  • Construction & Structural Steel (USA, India, Europe)
ASTM A307 Grade A hex bolts are widely specified in the USA under AISC 360 and ASD/LRFD design manuals for general structural connections, sign supports, and light-duty steel framing. In India and the Middle East, A307 bolts are standard in industrial building construction, equipment skid mounting, and secondary steel structures.
  •  Oil & Gas — Cast-Iron Flanged Piping Systems
ASTM A307 Grade B heavy hex bolts are specified per ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.1 for cast-iron flanged joints in oil and gas piping. The controlled tensile range (60–100 ksi) prevents over-stressing brittle cast-iron flanges. Major refinery projects in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE routinely specify A307B for low-pressure utility piping.
  •  Civil & Infrastructure — Anchor Bolts
Grade C anchor bolts (now ASTM F1554 Grade 36) are used for structural column base plates, equipment anchorage to concrete foundations, transmission tower anchorage, and bridge abutment connections. The 36 ksi yield strength aligns with AISC and ACI 318 design requirements.
Further reading: ASTM A307 vs A325 vs F3125 — Structural Bolts Comparison.
  • Marine & Offshore (Hot-Dip Galvanized)
Hot-dip galvanized ASTM A307 bolts (per ASTM A153) are standard hardware for jetty structures, dock pilings, coastal bridge hardware, and covered walkway steel. European marine projects often require EN ISO 1461-compliant HDG coatings alongside the A307 specification.
  •  Power Generation & Utilities
ASTM A307 threaded rods and hex bolts are used extensively in power plants for cable tray supports, conduit hangers, non-critical equipment mounting, and general plant hardware — cost-effective for the large volumes required in plant construction.
  •  Chemical & Petrochemical Plants
PTFE/Xylan-coated ASTM A307 bolts are used in non-critical pipe supports, equipment skid framing, and general plant hardware in chemical processing facilities. For corrosive environments where A307 carbon steel is marginal, Jade Alloys can advise on appropriate alloy upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A307 Bolts

What is ASTM A307?
ASTM A307 is an ASTM standard specification for carbon steel bolts, studs, and threaded rods with a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 PSI (60 ksi). It covers fasteners from 1/4" to 4" diameter in two active grades: Grade A for general applications and Grade B for cast-iron flanged piping systems.
What is the difference between ASTM A307 Grade A and Grade B?
Grade A covers headed bolts, threaded rods, and bent bolts with 60 ksi minimum tensile for general-purpose structural applications. Grade B covers heavy hex bolts and studs with 60–100 ksi tensile for flanged joints in cast-iron piping (ASME B16.5). Key differences: head type (standard vs. heavy hex) and tighter sulfur limit in Grade B (0.05% vs. 0.15%).
What replaced ASTM A307 Grade C?
ASTM A307 Grade C was withdrawn in August 2007 and replaced by ASTM F1554 Grade 36. Both cover non-headed anchor bolts for structural anchorage with 36 ksi minimum yield. For new projects, specify ASTM F1554 Grade 36. Jade Alloys stocks both.
What nuts should be used with ASTM A307 bolts?
Per ASTM A307 Section 1.3: Grade A (1/4" to 1-1/2") — ASTM A563 Grade A Hex Nuts; Grade A (1-1/2" to 4") — ASTM A563 Grade A Heavy Hex Nuts; Grade B (all sizes) — ASTM A563 Grade A Heavy Hex Nuts. For HDG bolts, oversize-tapped nuts are required.
What is the tensile strength of ASTM A307 bolts?
Grade A: 60 ksi minimum (413 MPa). Grade B: 60–100 ksi. No minimum yield strength is specified for Grade A or B. Hardness: 121–241 BHN (Grade A) and 121–212 BHN (Grade B).
Can ASTM A307 bolts be hot-dip galvanized?
Yes. A307 bolts can be HDG per ASTM A153. Because they are not heat-treated (no quench and temper), they carry no hydrogen embrittlement risk — unlike higher-strength bolts above 150 ksi. Companion nuts must be oversize-tapped per ASTM A563 to accommodate the zinc coating.
What is the difference between ASTM A307 and ASTM A325?
A307 is low-strength (60 ksi, no heat treatment) for general connections where slip resistance does not govern. A325 is high-strength (120 ksi, quench and tempered) for high-preload structural connections per AISC/RCSC. A325 costs significantly more.
What is ASME SA307?
ASME SA307 is ASME's adoption of ASTM A307 for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) applications. The technical requirements are identical. Jade Alloys supplies material dual-certified as ASTM A307 / ASME SA307 on request.
What is the standard torque for ASTM A307 bolts?
ASTM A307 does not specify installation torque. Representative values for Grade A plain bolts: 3 ft-lbs (1/4"), 12 ft-lbs (3/8"), 29 ft-lbs (1/2"), 58 ft-lbs (5/8"), 104 ft-lbs (3/4"), 251 ft-lbs (1"). Always consult your project structural engineer for the specified torque value.
Are ASTM A307 bolts suitable for structural steel connections?
Yes, for bearing-type connections where high preload is not required. AISC 360 permits A307 bolts in bearing-type connections with standard holes. They are NOT suitable for slip-critical connections or high-preload applications — use A325 or A490 for those.
