The Most Versatile Corrosion-Resistant Alloy

hastelloy-c276-sheets

Hastelloy C276 is a nickel–molybdenum–chromium superalloy engineered for outstanding resistance in both oxidizing and reducing corrosive environments. The addition of tungsten enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich media.

Its exceptionally low carbon content (max. 0.01 wt%) minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding, maintaining full corrosion resistance in as-welded condition, a critical advantage for fabricated chemical process equipment.

Manufacturing Process of Hastelloy C276 Sheets & Plates

  • VIM/AOD Melting & Casting: The alloy is vacuum induction melted (VIM) or argon oxygen decarburised (AOD) to achieve the tightly controlled low-carbon chemistry (max 0.01 wt%) that defines C276. The melt is cast into slabs or ingots.
  • Hot Rolling: Slabs are hot-rolled in the temperature window of 1230–950 °C to reduce thickness and break down the as-cast dendritic structure. Solution annealing is performed after hot forming to dissolve any secondary phases before cold working commences.
  • Cold Rolling (sheet only): Sheet product is cold-rolled in multiple passes to achieve final gauge. C276 work-hardens at a higher rate than austenitic stainless steels; intermediate anneals are applied between cold-work passes exceeding approximately 15–20% reduction to control microstructure.
  • Solution Annealing & Quenching: The final heat treatment is solution annealing at 1121–1177 °C (2050–2150 °F) followed by rapid water quenching to suppress carbide re-precipitation and restore full corrosion resistance per ASTM B575.

Each batch of Hastelloy C276 Sheets & Plates undergoes mandatory quality testing including Positive Material Identification (PMI), Intergranular Corrosion (IGC) test, mechanical test, hardness test, and hydrostatic testing before dispatch. All products are supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC) confirming compliance with ASTM B575.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from engineers and procurement teams about Hastelloy C276 Sheets & Plates.

What is Hastelloy C276 used for?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is used for equipment handling aggressive chemicals, acids, and corrosive gases. Key industries include chemical processing (reactors, heat exchangers), oil & gas (sour service, FGD), pharmaceutical manufacturing (sterile vessels), pulp & paper (bleaching circuits), and waste incineration (scrubbers). Its exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking makes it one of the most widely used corrosion-resistant alloys globally.

What is the difference between Hastelloy C276 sheet and plate?

In the alloy industry, sheet refers to material up to 3 mm thick with tighter tolerances and smoother surfaces, while plate refers to material over 3 mm thick, typically hot rolled. Both are supplied to ASTM B575 / ASME SB-575 with the same chemical composition and mechanical properties.

Can Hastelloy C276 be welded?

Yes. Hastelloy C276 can be welded using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW, and SAW processes. Recommended filler metals are ERNiCrMo-4 (AWS A5.14) and ENiCrMo-4 (AWS A5.11). Due to its very low carbon content, post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.

How does Hastelloy C276 compare to 316L stainless steel?

Hastelloy C276 offers significantly higher corrosion resistance than 316L stainless steel, particularly in chloride environments, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, wet chlorine, and mixed acid services. While more expensive, it can provide substantially longer service life in severe applications.

Do you provide Hastelloy C276 with EN 10204 3.1 MTC?

Yes. All standard supply from Jade Alloys is accompanied by EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates with full chemical analysis and mechanical property reports. EN 10204 3.2 certificates, PMI testing, UT testing, and IGC reports are available on request.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for Hastelloy C276?

Jade Alloys can supply Hastelloy C276 sheets and plates from as little as 25–50 kg for standard stock sizes. Minimum order quantities for cut-to-size material, special thicknesses, or custom finishes may vary.

What surface finishes are available for Hastelloy C276 plates?

Available finishes include No.1 (hot rolled, annealed & pickled), 2B (cold rolled bright finish), No.4 brushed, BA (bright annealed), Mirror/No.8, Hairline, and electropolished or passivated finishes for specialized applications.

What is the maximum service temperature for Hastelloy C276?

In oxidizing atmospheres, Hastelloy C276 can operate up to approximately 1038°C (1900°F). For long-term corrosion-resistant service in chloride, sour gas, and acid environments, the recommended upper operating temperature is approximately 400°C (750°F).

Is Hastelloy C276 compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service?

Yes. Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for use in H₂S-containing oil and gas environments. In the solution-annealed condition with hardness not exceeding 35 HRC, it meets sour service qualification requirements.
