Jade Alloys is a stocked supplier and exporter of Nickel 201 Sheets & Plates conforming to ASTM B162 / ASME SB162. Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) is a commercially pure, low-carbon nickel alloy containing a minimum of 99.0% nickel. The defining difference from Nickel 200 is its reduced carbon content (0.02% max), which eliminates intergranular embrittlement in service above 315 degrees C (600 degrees F). This makes Nickel 201 plates the preferred choice over Nickel 200 in elevated-temperature applications including caustic soda evaporators, food-processing vessels, aerospace combustion hardware, and electronic component fabrication. Available in sheets, plates, coils, foils, and strips, we supply cut-to-size against MTCs with full traceability.
Nickel 201 Plates and Sheets are manufactured with excellent mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 462 MPa (minimum), a yield strength of 148 MPa (minimum), and an elongation capacity of up to 45%. With a density of 8.9 g/cm3 and a melting point of 1446 degrees C, these products offer superior high-temperature performance. Available in thicknesses ranging from 0.3 mm to 120 mm and a wide selection of widths and lengths, they are produced in hot rolled and cold rolled variants. Cold rolled plates offer exceptional dimensional accuracy and smooth surface finish, while hot rolled plates provide superior formability and workability for demanding structural applications.
Nickel 201 Sheets & Plates exhibit excellent corrosion resistance in oxidising, neutral, and alkaline environments, including resistance to caustic bases, acids, distilled water, and natural water. They also possess remarkable thermal, electrical, and magnetostrictive properties, making them highly versatile across critical industries. The Nickel 201 Shim Sheets (DIN 2.4068 foil / UNS N02201 coil) are widely used to fill precise gaps in structural assemblies and are ideal for handling corrosive media. The DIN 2.4068 foil finds application in heat treatment processes for surface protection, while UNS N02201 coils perform reliably in highly corrosive industrial environments over extended service periods. These products can withstand operating temperatures up to 315 degrees C without degradation.
These Nickel 201 materials serve critical sectors including aerospace, chemical processing, petrochemical refining, marine engineering, power generation, food processing, and pipeline engineering. Jade Alloys actively exports these products to key markets across the Gulf region (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman), Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India), and Europe (Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Romania), with ready stock maintained at our Mumbai facility for prompt dispatch. All products conform to national and international quality standards and can be custom-cut and supplied as per client specifications.

| Source: ASTM B162-19. Carbon max 0.02% is the key differentiator between Nickel 201 and Nickel 200 (C max 0.15%). The low carbon ceiling prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during extended service above 315 degrees C. This makes Nickel 201 plates the only suitable grade for weld-fabricated structures exposed to sustained elevated temperatures. |

Nickel 201 vs Nickel 200 - What is the Difference?
The selection between Nickel 201 and Nickel 200 is determined primarily by operating temperature and whether the component will be welded. Both alloys share the same minimum 99.0% nickel content and are supplied to ASTM B162 / ASME SB162, but the carbon limit distinguishes their suitability for elevated-temperature service.
| Property | Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) | Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Content (max) | 0.15% | 0.02% |
| Max Service Temperature | 315 degrees C (600 degrees F) | Suitable above 315 degrees C |
| Grain Boundary Sensitivity | Risk above 315 degrees C | Eliminated by low carbon |
| Best For | Ambient and low-temperature caustic service | High-temperature caustic evaporators, welded structures, electronic components |
| Standard | ASTM B162 / ASME SB162 | ASTM B162 / ASME SB162 |
Compare with our Nickel 200 Sheets & Plates for ambient-temperature applications. When in doubt about temperature or weld exposure, Nickel 201 is the conservative and preferred choice.
Corrosion Resistance of Nickel 201 Sheets & Plates
Mechanisms and Performance in Aggressive Environments
Nickel 201 sheets derive corrosion resistance from nickel’s inherent thermodynamic stability and passivation behaviour. Unlike chromium-based alloys that rely on a Cr2O3 passive film, high-purity nickel forms a thin, adherent NiO oxide layer that is highly stable across a wide pH range, particularly in reducing environments where stainless steels fail.
- Caustic Soda (NaOH) and Alkali Resistance: This is the flagship application domain for Nickel 201 plates. The alloy exhibits outstanding resistance to sodium hydroxide at all concentrations and temperatures up to and including the molten state (~318 degrees C). Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) which affects stainless steels severely in hot caustic does not occur in Nickel 201. For caustic evaporators, storage tanks, and piping systems in chlor-alkali plants, Nickel 201 is the industry standard.
- Hydrofluoric Acid (HF): Nickel 201 demonstrates excellent resistance to anhydrous HF and HF gas across a wide temperature range, making it critical for fluorine chemical production and uranium processing equipment.
- Chloride Environments: Unlike austenitic stainless steels, Nickel 201 is highly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments. It does not suffer chloride-induced SCC, which is a critical advantage in marine and offshore applications in the Gulf region.
- Reducing Acids: Nickel 201 sheets resist dilute sulfuric acid, dilute hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid under non-oxidising conditions. In the presence of oxidising agents (e.g., dissolved oxygen, ferric ions), corrosion rates increase substantially, and higher-alloyed nickel grades should be evaluated.
- Oxidising Environments: At elevated temperatures in air, Nickel 201 forms a protective NiO scale up to approximately 600 degrees C. Above this range, oxidation rates become more significant and chromium-bearing alloys such as Inconel 600 or Incoloy 800 are preferred.
Work Hardening Behaviour
Nickel 201 is a solid-solution strengthened material with a moderate work-hardening rate significantly lower than austenitic stainless steels but higher than aluminium alloys. The face-centred cubic (FCC) crystal structure allows extensive cold working with retention of ductility. Nickel 201 cold rolled sheets can achieve tensile strengths exceeding 700 MPa through heavy cold reduction (greater than 50%), while maintaining sufficient elongation for subsequent forming. Intermediate annealing at 700 to 925 degrees C in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum restores full ductility. This makes Nickel 201 highly suitable for deep-drawn components such as caustic evaporator trays, spinning electrodes, and formed chemical reactor linings.

Industrial Applications of Nickel 201 Sheets & Plates
- Chlor-Alkali and Caustic Processing: Nickel 201 plates are the established material of construction for caustic soda (NaOH) production and concentration equipment including evaporator bodies, liquor piping, agitator components, storage tanks, and pump casings. The alloy’s immunity to SCC in hot concentrated caustic makes it irreplaceable in this sector. Major chlor-alkali plants across the Gulf (Saudi Arabia, UAE), South Asia (India), and Europe (Germany, Netherlands) specify Nickel 201 as the standard of construction.
- Oil & Gas and Petrochemical: In sour gas and crude oil processing, Nickel 201 sheets are used for HF alkylation unit components, amine treating equipment linings, and heat exchanger plates in services where chloride SCC of stainless steels is a design risk. Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) refineries, including ARAMCO-affiliated facilities in Saudi Arabia and ADNOC operations in the UAE, utilise Nickel 201 for critical corrosion-resistant lining applications.
- Electronics and Battery Manufacturing: Nickel 201 cold rolled sheets and strips are used extensively in battery component manufacturing, including electrode substrates, battery cans for alkaline and NiMH cells, and electrical contact components. The low carbon content ensures superior formability and weld integrity at fine gauges. Asia’s battery manufacturing hubs in Japan, South Korea, and China are key destinations for Nickel 201 strip coils.
- Chemical Processing Equipment: Reaction vessels, autoclaves, distillation column internals, and piping for fluorine chemistry, HF handling, organic acid processing, and pharmaceutical synthesis are fabricated in Nickel 201 plates. The alloy’s resistance to both organic acids and inorganic acids under reducing conditions makes it versatile for multi-service chemical plants across Europe (Germany, Italy, Netherlands) and Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia).
- Food Processing and Pharmaceutical: Nickel 201 sheets with 2B and No.4 surface finishes are approved for contact with food and pharmaceutical products due to the alloy’s resistance to organic acid corrosion and low contamination potential. Caustic cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems using hot NaOH are fully compatible. Applications include mixing vessels, conveyor surfaces, and processing tanks.
- Aerospace and Defence: Combustion chambers, transition liners, ignition cans, and hot gas ducting in industrial gas turbines and aircraft engines utilise Nickel 201 for its combination of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and fabricability. The alloy is also used for spark plug shells and magnetostriction components.
- Marine and Offshore: Marine equipment in chloride-laden environments including seawater desalination components, offshore platform instruments, and submarine cable sheathing benefits from Nickel 201’s immunity to chloride SCC. Gulf region offshore facilities and European North Sea operators specify Nickel 201 for critical corrosion-resistant applications.
| In caustic soda and chlorine production, Nickel 201 plates are specified over Nickel 200 because prolonged service above 315 degrees C in caustic environments causes graphitisation in higher-carbon alloys. Nickel 201’s 0.02% max carbon eliminates this failure mode. In aerospace and gas turbine applications, its thermal stability and workability allow deep-drawn combustion liner fabrication that cannot be achieved with stainless alternatives. In food processing and electronic component manufacture, its non-magnetic properties above the Curie temperature and full traceability to ASTM B162 mill certificates satisfy both process integrity and regulatory requirements. |
Fabrication, Welding, and Heat Treatment Guidelines
Welding
All standard fusion welding processes are applicable to Nickel 201 sheets and plates: GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW, PAW, and SAW. Recommended filler metal is ERNi-1 (per AWS A5.14) for autogenous welds, or ERNiCu-7 (Monel-type) depending on joint requirements. Key welding precautions include: minimise heat input to reduce grain growth; maintain clean joint surfaces free of sulfur, phosphorus, and lead contamination as these tramp elements cause hot cracking in the heat-affected zone; back-purge with inert gas when welding pipe sections; and post-weld anneal at 700 to 925 degrees C when the weldment will be subjected to elevated temperature service.
Forming and Cold Working
Nickel 201 cold rolled sheets have excellent formability due to the FCC structure and high ductility (45% elongation in annealed condition). Bending, deep drawing, spinning, and roll forming are all performed using conventional equipment with increased press loads versus mild steel. Tooling should be sharp and well-lubricated. Intermediate annealing is recommended when cold reduction exceeds 15 to 20% in a single pass for thickness-critical components.
Heat Treatment
Annealing of Nickel 201 plates is performed at 700 to 925 degrees C followed by rapid air cooling or water quench. This range recrystallises the cold worked microstructure and dissolves any carbide precipitates. Stress relief without full recrystallisation can be achieved at 425 to 600 degrees C. No age hardening response exists — strength is controlled entirely by cold work level.
Machining
Nickel 201 machines similarly to austenitic stainless steels. Use sharp, positive-rake carbide tooling, maintain high cutting speeds, and avoid work-hardening of the surface by ensuring consistent feed without dwelling. Cutting fluids with sulfur-bearing additives must be completely removed before high-temperature service to prevent hot corrosion.
