The ASTM A563 specification provides the chemical and mechanical specifications of carbon and alloy steel nuts that are used in conjunction with the bolts, studs, and other externally threaded fasteners. The standard gives specifications on over-tapping allowance of the hot-dip galvanized nuts, marking to grade, and mechanical specifications and further details are given through a Nut Compatibility Chart.
One of the major provisions in the A563 specification is that the suppliers may replace a stronger grade of nut than is indicated, as long as the purchaser is notified and the replacement is not expressly prohibited by the order. This is necessary due to the flexibility of the fact that not every grade of nut will be immediately available in every size and finish. Besides, the specification also allows using ASTM A194 Grade 2H nuts in place of A563 Grade DH nuts with nominal sizes higher than 3/4 inch to overcome Grade DH availability challenges.
In the case of nuts that are held in a hot-dip galvanizing process, the nuts have to be oversized to fit the thickness of the zinc coating on the outer threads of the mating fastener. ASTM specification also includes different designs of nuts such as hex, heavy hex, square, jam, coupling, and sleeve and the type of nut required is usually determined by the grade of the nut.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A563 Nuts
What is the ASTM A563 nut?
ASTM A563 specification gives the specifications of carbon and alloy steel nuts to be used as general structural and mechanical applications. These nuts are compatible with bolts, studs and other externally threaded components and can be used in a broad range of applications than A194 nuts.
What is the ASTM A563 nut equivalent?
ASTM A194 Grade 2H nut is specifically allowed to be replaced with an A563 Grade DH nut. Grade DH itself is acceptable in this substitution, which is sometimes because of the scarcity of Grade DH of particular sizes.
What is the torque on ASTM A563?
Certain values of torque are determined by the bolt/nut assembly and diameter, though in the case of A563 material, typical minimum tensile strength is approximately 34.200 lbf, and a recommended value of torque of 210 ft lb is frequently quoted as a typical assembly size.
What is the hardness of ASTM A563?
According to ASTM A563 Grade A, the tensile strength of the nuts in flat form should not fall short of 90 ksi. In the case of galvanized steel nuts, the maximum proof load should be 68 ksi. Hardness of this grade is in most cases 116 to 302 HBN which is sufficient to maintain its durability and reliability in its structural use.
What is the difference between Grade A and Grade C A563?
Grade A nuts include normal carbon steel that can be applied in the broad engineering applications. Grade C nuts are manufactured using quenched and tempered carbon steel, which is designed to achieve much higher strength need than Grade A.
