ASTM A312 UNS S31254 SMO 254, SMO 254 EFW Pipes, UNS S31254 Pipes, SMO 254 Welded Pipes and Tubes Manufacturer, Supplier & Exporter in India

Jade Special Metals is a leading manufacturer, stockist and exporter of SMO 254 Pipes & Tubes, a 6% molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel supplied under ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 (welded & seamless pipe), ASTM A213 (seamless tube), ASTM A249 (welded tube), ASTM A269 and ASTM A358 (EFW pipe). Known globally as UNS S31254, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4547, F44 and “6-Moly”, this grade delivers roughly three times the yield strength of the standard 300-series and is engineered for chloride environments where 316L and even 904L fail.

254 SMO Pipe resists pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking with a PREN value of approximately 43–45, making it a proven, cost-efficient alternative to nickel-base alloys and titanium in seawater service. Because its allowable design stress is up to 50% higher than conventional austenitic stainless steels, designers can specify thinner walls, cutting weight and total installed cost on large-bore systems.

Jade Alloys stocks 254 SMO seamless pipe, welded pipe, ERW pipe, EFW pipe, seamless tube, welded tube, heat exchanger tube, square pipe, rectangular pipe, hollow section, coiled tubing and capillary tube in sizes from 1/8″ NB to 30″ NB and wall thicknesses from 0.35 mm to 50 mm, in single random, double random and cut lengths. As one of India’s trusted 254 SMO pipe suppliers, we ship ex-Mumbai and Kalamboli ports to 50+ countries with full EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 documentation.

What is 254 SMO Pipe?

254 SMO Pipe is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel pipe containing approximately 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6.1% molybdenum, 0.7% copper and 0.20% nitrogen, with carbon held to 0.020% max. The high molybdenum-plus-nitrogen combination is what gives ASTM A312 UNS S31254 its exceptional pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-bearing and acidic media.

Key characteristics of SMO 254 Pipes & Tubes:

  • Superior chloride resistance: Suitable for seawater, brackish water and desalination service.
  • High strength: Minimum yield of 300 MPa, roughly double that of 316L, permitting thinner-wall design.
  • Excellent toughness: Good impact strength and ductility at sub-zero as well as ambient temperature.
  • Fully austenitic and non-magnetic: Magnetic permeability below 1.05.
  • Readily weldable: Welded with over-alloyed nickel-base filler (Alloy 625 / C-276 type).
  • Cost-efficient: A technically adequate substitute for nickel alloys and titanium at lower material cost.

Note on service temperature: the grade contains no stabilising elements, so continuous service is normally limited to below approximately 400 °C (750 °F) to avoid sigma-phase and intermetallic precipitation. Hot working is performed in the 1150–1200 °C range.

Welding, Machining & Heat Treatment of SMO 254 Pipe

Welding: 254 SMO pipe is readily welded by TIG, MIG, SMAW and plasma processes. Because molybdenum segregates during solidification, always use an over-alloyed nickel-base filler (ERNiCrMo-3 / Alloy 625 or ERNiCrMo-4 / C-276 type) to avoid loss of pitting resistance in the weld metal. Keep interpass temperature below 100 °C and heat input low. No pre-heat is required.

Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1150–1200 °C followed by rapid water quenching. Forging and hot upsetting is performed at 982–1149 °C. Post-fabrication solution annealing is strongly recommended to restore maximum corrosion resistance, particularly after cold work or pickling.

Machining: ASTM A312 UNS S31254 is tough to machine due to its low sulphur content and high work-hardening rate. Use sharp tooling, rigid setups, positive feeds and generous coolant. Speeds should be reduced roughly 40–50% versus 316L.

Cold Working: Cold forming is possible but requires higher forces because proof stress is high and elongation comparatively low. The grade can only be hardened by cold reduction; it does not respond to hardening by heat treatment.

Testing, Certification & Packaging

Tests performed: Ultrasonic testing, radiography, eddy current, hydrostatic testing, flaring test, flattening test, bend test, PMI (Positive Material Identification), spectro / chemical analysis, tensile and mechanical testing, hardness testing, IGC (ASTM A262 Practice E), pitting resistance test (ASTM G48), micro/macro examination, dimensional and visual inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions - SMO 254 Pipes & Tubes

1. What is SMO 254 pipe used for?

SMO 254 pipe is used in seawater handling, desalination plants, offshore oil & gas piping, flue gas desulphurisation scrubbers, pulp mill bleach systems, chemical processing, heat exchangers and food processing equipment essentially anywhere high chloride levels would cause pitting or crevice corrosion in ordinary stainless steel.

2. Is 254 SMO the same as UNS S31254?

Yes. 254 SMO is the trade name; UNS S31254 is the American designation, 1.4547 is the German Werkstoff number, and F44 is the forged-product designation. They all refer to the same 6% molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel.

3. What is the difference between 254 SMO and 316L?

254 SMO contains about 6.1% molybdenum and 0.2% nitrogen versus roughly 2.1% Mo and no deliberate nitrogen in 316L. This gives 254 SMO a PREN of ~43 against ~25 for 316L, plus roughly double the yield strength. In seawater, 316L pits readily while 254 SMO does not.

4. What is the difference between 254 SMO and 904L?

Both are high-alloy austenitics, but 254 SMO has higher molybdenum (6.1% vs 4.3%) and nitrogen, giving a higher PREN (~43 vs ~35) and better chloride pitting resistance, along with significantly higher strength. 904L offers slightly better resistance to sulphuric acid at some concentrations.

5. Which ASTM standard covers 254 SMO pipe?

ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 covers seamless and welded 254 SMO pipe; ASTM A213 covers seamless tube; ASTM A249 covers welded tube; ASTM A269 covers general-service tubing; and ASTM A358 covers EFW pipe.

6. What filler metal should be used for welding 254 SMO?

Use an over-alloyed nickel-base filler such as ERNiCrMo-3 (Alloy 625) or ERNiCrMo-4 (Alloy C-276). Matching filler is not recommended because molybdenum segregation during solidification would reduce weld-metal pitting resistance below that of the parent pipe.

7. Is 254 SMO magnetic?

No. 254 SMO is fully austenitic with a magnetic permeability below 1.05, so it is effectively non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Heavy cold work may induce a very slight magnetic response.

8. What is the maximum service temperature of SMO 254 pipe?

Continuous service is normally limited to about 400 °C (750 °F). Above this, intermetallic and sigma-phase precipitation can reduce toughness and corrosion resistance. Hot working is carried out at 1150–1200 °C followed by solution annealing and water quenching.

9. Do you supply 254 SMO pipe with NACE MR0175 certification?

Yes. Our SMO 254 stainless steel pipe conforms to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service, and is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificates and third-party inspection reports on request.
