What Are Pipes and Tubes?

Both pipes and tubes are hollow cylindrical sections used to convey fluids, gases and slurries or to carry structural load but they are specified, manufactured and tolerance-controlled differently, and the two terms are not interchangeable on a purchase order. Understanding the distinction matters whether you’re buying from a pipes supplier, a tubes supplier, or sourcing both from a single vendor.

A pipe is specified by Nominal Bore (NB) or Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) plus a schedule number. The NPS is a nominal designator, not a measured dimension: a 2″ NPS pipe has an actual outside diameter of 60.33 mm. The schedule (SCH 10, 40, 80, 160, etc.) fixes the wall thickness. Pipes prioritise pressure-carrying capacity and flow area, and are governed by dimensional standards such as ASME B36.10M (carbon and alloy steel) and ASME B36.19M (stainless steel).

A tube is specified by its actual outside diameter and either a wall thickness in mm or a gauge (SWG/BWG). Tubes are held to much tighter dimensional and concentricity tolerances because they are usually a structural, heat-transfer or instrumentation component — a heat exchanger tube must fit a drilled tubesheet hole to a fraction of a millimetre.

Pipe vs Tube — Key Differences

Parameter Pipe Tube
Sized by Nominal Bore (NB / NPS) + schedule Actual Outside Diameter (OD) + wall thickness / gauge
Primary concern Flow capacity and internal pressure Dimensional precision, structural strength, heat transfer
Tolerances Looser (typically ±12.5% on wall) Tight (often ±10% or better, plus straightness & ovality limits)
Typical shape Round only Round, square, rectangular, oval, coiled, U-bent
Common joining Butt weld, socket weld, threaded, flanged Welded, brazed, compression fitting, flare fitting, roller-expanded
Cost driver Sold by weight Sold by weight, but higher $/kg due to tighter processing
Typical standards ASTM A106, A312, A335, API 5L, ASME B36.10M/B36.19M ASTM A213, A249, A269, A270, A179, A192
Ordering example “2” NB SCH 40 ASTM A106 Gr. B seamless” “19.05 mm OD × 2.11 mm WT ASTM A213 TP316L”

Practical rule of thumb

If the drawing calls out a schedule, you need a pipe. If it calls out an OD and a wall in mm or a gauge, you need a tube. Ordering the wrong one is the single most common cause of rejected material at site.

Types of Pipes and Tubes We Manufacture

01 / Seamless
Seamless Pipes and Tubes

Produced by piercing a solid round billet and elongating it over a mandrel, with no weld seam anywhere in the cross-section. Because there is no heat-affected zone, seamless pipe offers uniform strength around its circumference and is the default choice for high-pressure, high-temperature and severely corrosive duty: boiler circuits, refinery hydrocarbon lines, hydraulic systems and subsea flowlines. Available across our full grade range.

02 / ERW
ERW Pipes

Formed from strip or coil, rolled to shape and joined by a high-frequency resistance weld without filler metal. ERW is dimensionally consistent, economical in the 1/2"-24" range and widely used for water, low-pressure gas, structural, fire-protection and general service lines under API 5L and ASTM A53.

03 / Welded
Welded / EFW & LSAW Pipes

For larger diameters where seamless is impractical or uneconomical, we supply electric fusion welded and longitudinally submerged-arc welded pipe to ASTM A312, A358 and API 5L up to 48" OD. Radiographic testing of the weld seam is standard.

04 / Heat Transfer
Heat Exchanger & Boiler Tubes

Tight-tolerance tubes to ASTM A179, A192, A210, A213 and A249, supplied straight or as U-bends, with hydrostatic and eddy-current testing. This is the most tolerance-critical product we make - see our tube plugs and header plugs for the matching maintenance consumables.

05 / Instrumentation
Instrumentation Tubing

Small-bore, bright-annealed seamless tubing in 316/316L to ASTM A269/A213, supplied in straight lengths or coils for impulse lines, control panels and hydraulic circuits. Also available as SS 304 and SS 316 capillary tubes.

06 / Sections
Square, Rectangular & Hollow Sections

Structural and decorative hollow sections in stainless and carbon steel, available in mill, matte, satin and mirror finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a pipe and a tube?

A pipe is specified by nominal bore (NB/NPS) and a schedule number that fixes its wall thickness, and is designed primarily to carry fluid at pressure. A tube is specified by its actual outside diameter and wall thickness or gauge, and is held to much tighter dimensional tolerances because it is usually a structural or heat-transfer component. A 2" NPS pipe measures 60.33 mm OD; a 2" tube measures exactly 50.8 mm OD.

2. Which is better: seamless or welded pipe?

Neither is universally better. Seamless pipe has no weld seam and therefore no heat-affected zone, making it the safer choice for high pressure, high temperature and severe corrosion. Welded and ERW pipe is more dimensionally consistent, available in larger diameters and significantly more economical for low- and medium-pressure service. Your design code and service conditions decide it, not preference.

3. What sizes of pipes and tubes does Jade Alloys supply?

Pipes from 1/8" NB to 48" OD in schedules from SCH 5S to XXS, and tubes from 1/2" OD to 12" OD in gauges from 25 SWG to 10 SWG. Non-standard sizes can be produced against a firm order.

4. What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no fixed MOQ for stocked items — we supply single lengths from ready stock. Mill-run production against a specific grade and size typically requires a minimum tonnage, which our sales team will confirm with your enquiry.

5. Do you provide mill test certificates?

Yes. Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat number traceability. Third-party inspection by Lloyd's, TÜV, BV, SGS or DNV can be arranged at your cost.

6. Which grade should I choose for seawater service?

For seawater and high-chloride environments, Super Duplex S32750/S32760 and SMO 254 are the usual choices — 316L will pit and crack in that duty. For seawater cooling at lower velocity, Cupro-Nickel 90/10 remains common. Send us the chloride concentration, temperature and flow velocity and we will recommend against your actual conditions.

7. How long does delivery take?

Standard stocked sizes dispatch within 3–7 working days of order confirmation. Non-stock grades and custom sizes run to mill lead time, typically 4–8 weeks depending on grade. Export shipments add transit time by sea or air.

8. Do you export pipes and tubes outside India?

Yes. We export to the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Americas, with sea-worthy packing, fumigation certificates and LC-compliant export documentation.

9. How do I calculate the weight of a pipe?

Use the standard formula: Weight (kg/m) = (OD − Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 0.0248 for carbon steel, or use our metal weight calculator, which applies the correct density factor for each alloy.

10. Can you supply pipes and tubes in custom lengths or bent to shape?

Yes, cut-to-length, fixed lengths, U-bends for heat exchangers, coils and pancake coils are all available. Send your drawing with the RFQ.
