What is DIN (German Institute for Standardization)?
DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standards are the primary technical specifications developed in Germany and used extensively across Europe and Asia. In the global hardware industry, DIN fasteners serve as the definitive benchmark for metric components, providing detailed requirements for dimensions, tolerances, materials, and surface finishes.
Although most of the DIN standard entries are being standardized to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or EN (European Norm) specifications, the original DIN specifications are most commonly used as a reference to specifying metric bolts, screws, and nuts by engineers and procurement experts.
DIN Fastener Standards
DIN fastener standards define precise dimensional, mechanical, and performance requirements for bolts, nuts, screws, studs, and washers used across mechanical engineering, automotive, and industrial applications. DIN specifications are globally recognized for their accuracy and consistency and have influenced many modern ISO standards.
Common DIN Fastener Standards
| DIN Standard | Fastener Type | Description / Application |
|---|---|---|
| DIN 931 | Hex Bolts | Partially threaded hexagon bolts. |
| DIN 933 | Hex Bolts | Fully threaded hexagon bolts. |
| DIN 934 | Hex Nuts | Standard hexagon nuts. |
| DIN 912 | Socket Head Cap Screws | Internal hex (Allen) head bolts. |
| DIN 913 | Set Screws | Flat point set screws. |
| DIN 914 | Set Screws | Cone point set screws. |
| DIN 915 | Set Screws | Dog point set screws. |
| DIN 916 | Set Screws | Cup point set screws. |
| DIN 975 | Threaded Rods | Fully threaded rods and studs. |
| DIN 976 | Threaded Rods | Metric threaded studs. |
| DIN 6914 | Structural Bolts | High-strength structural bolts. |
| DIN 6915 | Structural Nuts | High-strength structural nuts. |
| DIN 6921 | Hex Flange Bolts | Hex bolts with integral flange. |
| DIN 6923 | Hex Flange Nuts | Hex nuts with built-in washer flange. |
| DIN 7991 | Countersunk Screws | Flat head socket screws. |
| DIN 7380 | Button Head Screws | Low-profile socket head screws. |
| DIN 84 | Slotted Screws | Slotted cheese head screws. |
| DIN 125 | Plain Washers | Flat washers for general use. |
| DIN 127 | Spring Washers | Split lock washers. |
These DIN fasteners are extensively used in machinery, automotive assemblies, structural steelwork, pipelines, and industrial equipment.
Transition from DIN to ISO
Many DIN standards have been officially withdrawn and replaced by ISO standards to ensure global uniformity. However, because of their long-standing history, DIN numbers are still used as the primary “short-hand” in the industry.
- Example: DIN 933 is largely equivalent to ISO 4017.
- Example: DIN 934 is largely equivalent to ISO 4032.
At Jade Alloys, we cross-reference these standards to ensure the fasteners supplied meet the exact geometric and mechanical requirements of your project drawings.
Applications of DIN Fasteners
Due to their precision and metric-native design, DIN fasteners are essential in:
- Automotive Engineering: Precision assembly of engine and chassis components.
- Machinery & Tooling: German-spec equipment maintenance.
- Renewable Energy: Wind turbine and solar mounting structures.
- Manufacturing: Assembly lines and robotic systems.
