ISO 4014 covers hexagon head bolts with a shank, meaning the bolt is only partially threaded, with a smooth, unthreaded section of shank running from under the head down to where the thread begins. What Is ISO 4014?

ISO 4014 is the international standard covering hexagon head bolts with a shank, produced in metric sizes from M1.6 up to M64. The defining feature of the standard is the shank itself, the smooth, unthreaded length of the bolt body sitting just below the head, which is longer than on a fully threaded screw and gives the joint a defined bearing surface to work against. This is the main practical difference between ISO 4014 and its close relative ISO 4017, which covers the same head style but with the thread running the full length of the bolt. ISO 4014 bolts are produced in property classes such as 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9, and in stainless steel to ISO 3506 1, giving a wide range of strength and corrosion resistance options for the same dimensional standard.

Product Grade A and B Explained

ISO 4014 dimension tables distinguish between product grade A and product grade B, based on bolt diameter and length.

  • Grade A: Generally applies to smaller sizes up to and including M24, within the specified length limits, with tighter dimensional tolerances.
  • Grade B: Applies to larger diameters and longer bolts outside the grade A range, with wider dimensional tolerances.

When ordering, confirm the bolt diameter, length, thread specification, material and product grade, particularly where dimensional tolerances are critical. For specialised environments, alternatives such as Hastelloy C276 fasteners may also be considered.

ISO 4014 Weight Reference

Weight is not part of the ISO 4014 dimensional standard itself, but it is one of the first things a buyer needs once a size has been confirmed, for costing and freight purposes. ISO 4014 bolt weight follows the same shank volume calculation used across our other bolt weight charts, and the full metric range in kilograms per piece and per 100 pieces is available on our bolt weight chart. Bolts made to ISO 4014 and to ASME B18.2.3.5M share very close dimensions at most common sizes, so figures on that chart are a reliable reference for either standard at the sizes they have in common.

ISO 4014 Equivalent Standards

ISO 4014 sits within a small family of closely related and easily confused standards. The table below sets out the most relevant ones and how each relates to ISO 4014.

ASME B18.2.3.5MThe closest metric ASME equivalent, covering metric hex bolts to American practice, with minor differences in head dimensions and washer face detail compared with ISO 4014.

Weight is calculated from the shank and head volume using the diameter, length and head dimensions set out in the standard, multiplied by the density of the material. 7. Is ISO 4014 the same as a stainless steel hex bolt?

ISO 4014 defines the dimensions only. It is produced in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel, most commonly to ISO 3506 1 for stainless grades, so the standard itself does not specify a material, only the shape and size.
