To determine the exact loads for materials, logistics requirements and bill-of-quantities (BOQ) figures for structural framing, mechanical hanging or pipe support structures, one needs an accurate and verifiable threaded rod weight chart. When you must estimate shipping freight per metre, you need to know how the threaded rod weights are calculated, either when you want the hang load of a structure per piece or when you have to place an order for threaded rods in a thousand-piece quantity. One important point that is frequently ignored when doing material calculations is the distinction between nominal diameter and effective root diameter. Published values from industry sources may differ by 13 to 20 percent depending on the type of weight table used, one based on a solid bar equivalent or one that considers the weight of material removed during thread rolling or cutting.

What Is a Threaded Rod?

A threaded rod, commonly known as a fully threaded stud, all-thread, or threaded bar, is a continuous metal rod threaded along its entire length. Unlike standard hex bolts or cap screws, threaded rods do not feature a forged head or integral drive mechanism. They are designed to operate under tension and are secured by female threaded components such as hex nuts and washers at both ends.

Threaded rods are widely used in structural building ties, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) pipe hanging, concrete anchor bolts, and heavy industrial plant construction. While continuous threaded rods are typically manufactured in standard 1 metre, 2 metre, 12 foot, or 3 metre lengths, they are frequently cut down on site or factory supplied as custom cut length studs. How to Calculate Threaded Rod Weight (Nominal vs. Effective Diameter)

A common point of confusion when comparing online weight tables is why different engineering references cite different weights for the same nominal size. This discrepancy comes down to the mathematical basis used for the calculation:

  1. Solid Bar / Nominal Diameter Basis (d): Treats the rod as a perfectly smooth, solid cylinder using the full nominal thread diameter (d). This represents the maximum theoretical upper bound before threads are cut or rolled.
  2. Effective / Root Diameter Basis (dᵣ): Accounts for the helical grooves cut or rolled into the bar stock. Because material is displaced or removed to form the thread pitch, the actual cross-sectional mass of a finished threaded rod is lower than that of a plain round bar of the same nominal size.

Metric Weight per Metre Formula

To calculate the theoretical mass per metre (W, in kg/m) of a carbon steel threaded rod based on nominal outer diameter (d, in mm) and a standard steel density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.00000785 kg/mm³):

W = π/4 × d² × 1000 × 0.00000785 ≈ 0.006165 × d² kg/m

When adjusting for standard thread profile depth and pitch clearance (effective root diameter dᵣ ≈ 0.85d to 0.92d, depending on pitch), the actual mass of manufactured all-thread typically runs 13% to 20% lower than the solid bar formula.

2. How do I calculate the weight of a custom cut piece of threaded rod?

Multiply the rod’s weight per metre by the cut length in millimetres, then divide by 1,000. For example, a 250 mm M12 rod at 0.725 kg/m weighs about 0.181 kg.

3. How many 1-metre DIN 975 threaded rods make up 1,000 kg?

Divide 1,000 kg by the weight of one rod. For example, if an M16 rod weighs 1.33 kg, approximately 751 rods make one metric tonne.

4. What is the difference between DIN 975 and DIN 976?

DIN 975 was the older standard for continuous threaded rods, while DIN 976 replaced it and covers a wider range of lengths, end designs, and thread pitches.

5. Are stainless steel threaded rods heavier than carbon steel rods?

Yes. Stainless steel has a slightly higher density than carbon steel, so 304 and 316 stainless steel threaded rods are about 1% heavier for the same dimensions.

6. How much weight can a 1/2-inch or M12 threaded rod support?

Load capacity depends on the material grade and thread size. An M12 Class 4.8 rod has a proof load of about 33.7 kN, while an M12 Class 8.8 rod can exceed 60 kN in tension.
