Chromium content depends on the grade of the steel. For example, both 2205 and 2507 have certain composition ranges and not just one percentage of chromium.

What Is Duplex Stainless Steel?

Duplex stainless steel is a stainless steel family with a two phase microstructure containing both austenite and ferrite. The balanced structure provides a useful combination of corrosion resistance, strength and resistance to chloride-related stress corrosion cracking.

Grade 2205 is the benchmark duplex grade and is commonly identified with UNS S31803 and S32205. It contains approximately 22 percent chromium, with molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen contributing to its corrosion resistance and strength. The exact composition depends on the applicable specification and grade. 2. Is duplex 2205 better than super duplex 2507?

Neither grade is universally better. Duplex 2205 is often preferred where its corrosion resistance and strength are sufficient because it can provide a lower material cost. Super duplex 2507 is preferred when the environment demands higher resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride related stress corrosion cracking.

4. What is the PREN of super duplex 2507?

Super duplex 2507 generally has a PREN above 40 and is commonly around the low 40s. The exact result depends on the actual chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content.

5. Is S31803 the same as S32205?

S31803 and S32205 are closely related 2205 duplex grades. S32205 represents the enhanced chemistry version commonly used for modern 2205 products. The applicable specification should be checked because requirements can vary by product form and standard.

6. Is S32750 the same as 2507?

Yes. UNS S32750 is commonly identified as 2507 super duplex stainless steel and corresponds to EN 1.4410.

7. Is super duplex stainless steel more expensive than duplex?

Generally yes. Super duplex usually costs more because of its higher alloy content and more demanding manufacturing and quality requirements. The actual premium depends on market conditions, product form, dimensions, quantity and certification.

7. Can duplex stainless steel be used in seawater?

Duplex grades can be used in selected marine and chloride environments, but the suitability depends on chloride concentration, temperature, flow conditions and exposure time. Super duplex is generally considered where seawater exposure is particularly severe.

8. Which is stronger, duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507?

Super duplex 2507 generally has the higher yield strength. Typical minimum yield strength is around 450 MPa for 2205 and around 550 MPa for 2507 in relevant product specifications.
